I shake my head. “I don’t know.”

“Courtney?”

My gut churns. Courtney.

Where’s Courtney?

My mother says something, and the twins start toward the house.

There’s no time to find out.

“Fuck,” I whisper as I stand off the bed. “Get dressed.”

Dana follows, the sheet now on the floor as she gathers her clothes. “What do we do?” she asks.

I shove my legs into my jeans and pull them up. “I don’t know.”

“Should I sneak out?”

I throw on a shirt and rush to the window, cursing under my breath. Alex and Ben are surely through the front door already, and our parents are halfway there now. There’s no time.

“Connor.”

I turn to Dana in her loose black dress; the zipper hanging open halfway down her back. She has her phone in her hand. “What?” I ask.

“Call home ASAP. Bad news,” she reads, then looks up. “Text from my Dad.”

“Is he always that cryptic?”

She shrugs a yes.

A knock strikes the door. “Hey, Connor. You up?”

Alex and Ben.

And I’m in here with their sister.

“Closet,” I say.

Dana doesn’t argue as I half-push her toward the closet door. She scoops up her bag and takes it with her. “Connor,” she whispers, worried.

“I’ll get rid of them,” I say as I close the closet.

“Connor!” They pound the door again. “Wake up!”

I go to the door. I take a breath. Then another. And another.

Nope. No calmer than before.

I am so fucked.

I open the door a crack and smile through it. “Hey, guys. What’s up?”

Alex in red. Ben in blue. Both look at me with the same somber eyes.

“Hey,” Ben says. “You good?”

“I’m good. Why?”
