“No, you go ahead,” I say, giving him room. “There’s something I gotta do.”

He follows my gaze across the street and pauses with a look that’s hard to place. After a moment, he turns and walks into the house. Our house.

I pull out my phone, keeping an eye on her face as I send a text. A few seconds later, Dana reaches into her dress pocket and pulls out her phone. She smiles, then looks up and finds me. She replies. I send another.

Her smile grows as she reads it. She looks up again and nods.

CHAPTER 33

CONNOR

It’s easy to get away.

I slink out the back door just before two; the party continuing on behind me. I did some prep work in the hours before the scavenger hunt, planting the idea in Alex’s head at the campus wellness center that if they lose me tonight, then I’m probably off hooking up with a girl somewhere. Don’t wait up and don’t bother to come looking.

I wasn’t lying.

I just didn’t mention that I’d be with their sister.

Dana is at my car when I arrive in G-lot, just as we planned. I unlock the doors and we climb inside.

“Hey,” she says.

“Hey,” I say.

We ride in silence. She lowers the window, allowing the night air to cool her face. I look over at her now and then, her fingers fidgeting with the hem of her dress. So nervous.

But I’ll be gentle.

Fuck, this is really happening.

Me and Dana. Dana and me, for one night only.

I try not to think about the last bit as I park my car outside of my house. After unhooking my seatbelt, I reach out to touch her shoulder. “You okay?” I ask Dana.

She looks at me. “Yeah,” she says, her lips twitching with a smile. “I’m okay.”

I move my hand to the back of her neck, letting her soft hair run through my fingers. “Are you sure?” I ask.

A nod as she angles her cheek toward my hand. “I’m sure.”

I run my thumb under her bottom lip. I want so badly to kiss her here and now, but I know that once I start, I won’t be able to stop.

I look at the house, dark and empty.

There’s plenty of time.

We exit the car together and I lead her into the house. In the dark, we climb the stairs, her hand nestled in mine. I realize in all the years we’ve known each other, I can’t recall how many times Dana’s been in my bedroom. Possibly zero.

“Never been in your room before,” Dana says, reading my thoughts as we step inside.

“I was just thinking that,” I say.

She chuckles, her arms wrapping around her like a shield of armor.

“You hungry?” I ask.

“No, I’m fine. Thanks.”
