Did we — fuck, I can’t slow down?—!

We slam into the door at full momentum, but the thing is impressively rock solid. I stumble and fall, Emerson’s body collapsing along with mine. We crumble together onto the welcome mat, our limbs and bodies overlapping in a messy heap.

We lie still, far too tired to get back up and figure out what the fuck just happened.

“Connor!” I hear a twin on the stairs behind me. “You good?”

A hand tugs on my jacket. I let them pull me free as I attempt to push myself up, one of my legs trapped beneath Emerson’s.

“Hey!” Alex bangs on the door. “Open up! We still have eight seconds!”

Nope, that’s Ben.

The door opens on Kenny’s smiling face. Behind him, a party is in full swing, young men and women dressed in black with red plastic cups in every hand.

“Oh, hey, guys,” he says, his words slurring a bit. “What’s up?”

“We made it first!” Alex shouts.

“No, that’s bullshit!” Pete says. “We did!”

The six of us all argue at once, our voices growing louder and louder until Kenny raises his hand to silence us.

“Guys. Guys.” He smiles, warm and sage-like and… obviously very drunk. “Everybody wins.”

“Everybody wins?” I ask.

“Nobody loses in this house.” He raises his red cup. “Delta Xi!”

“Delta Xi!” the words echo from every mouth in sight.

He waves us in. “Come on in, brothers! Needle’s in the back.”

Needle?

I look at Alex and Ben, our eyes growing wide.

This is it.

Alex holds out a fist. Ben does too, and the three of us meet in a three-way bump.

We made it.

Pete and the other guy rush in, not willing to tempt fate. Alex and Ben follow and I pause, realizing I’m the last one alone with Emerson.

He looks down and smirks. “Nice panties.”

I frown, confused, before I glance at my left hand, my fingers clenched in a hard fist.

I’m still holding Dana’s panties.

White cotton. Yellow bow.

“Thanks,” I say, my heart skipping a few beats as I thrust them back into my jacket pocket.

Emerson bobs his head through the doorway. “You first, man,” he says.

I nearly step forward, but a burst of golden hair catches my eye from the Beta Kappa porch across the street.
