“Oh, super creepy now,” Ben mutters.
They step forward. We lurch back.
“Back off, man!” Alex shouts. “I know karate!”
The figure sighs, the sound distinctly feminine. She moves an arm, withdrawing her hand from her robe. In her hand, she holds a blue envelope.
I step forward, ignoring Alex’s tug on my elbow as I reach out and take it. “You from Delta Xi?” I ask.
“I go where I’m told to go,” she says.
“Who tells you where to go?” Ben asks. Good question.
“I don’t ask.” She steps back, her hand disappearing into her robe. “Strong Hall. Friday. 9:17 PM.”
She turns to walk away, obviously having completed her task.
“Wait.” Alex leans forward. “What’s your name?”
She doesn’t stop.
“I love you!”
She pauses with a momentary glance over her shoulder, then continues into the darkness and disappears.
“What?” Alex turns up his hands at our glares. “She sounded hot.”
I tear open the envelope. There’s a folded sheet of paper inside. Ben swipes on the flashlight on his phone and holds it up for me to read aloud.
“A red cup from Blair. Blue and gold socks. A photo with Barry.”
“Who the fuck is Barry?” Alex asks.
“The school mascot,” Ben says. “Barry the Bearhawk.”
“Oh.”
I chuckle. “Dana’s right. You really should pay more attention.”
“So, what is this?” Alex asks, already annoyed. “What was this for?”
I skim the rest, eying the bottom. “Bring all ten to the forty by midnight. Impress your brothers or abandon your birthright.” I look up. “It’s a scavenger hunt.”
“Wait. Or abandon your birthright?” Ben says. “If we don’t find all this shit, then we’re not Delta Xi?”
“Are you serious?” Alex asks.
“That’s what it says,” I say, reading it again. “Bring all ten to the forty…”
“Football field?” Ben says. “Forty yard line?”
“By midnight. How long does that give us?”
Ben checks his phone. “It’s 9:21 now, so…” A pause for math. “Two and a half hours?”
“That’s bullshit,” Alex says. “They can’t just not let us in. We’re legacy.”
Legacy. Our birthright.
