“I banged his dad.” She smirks. “Never heard from him again after that.” I laugh, feeling it in my cheeks. “I don’t fool around with students. Professors, however… are still fair game.” Her smile drops. “But not your mom! No, I’d never…” She exhales hard. “Please say you know what I mean.”

“I got you, Ms. Jaxx.”

Another sigh, then she waves me upstairs. “Go on and get changed,” she says. “You’re about to have the best night of your young life so far. You don’t want to miss a moment.”

I rush upstairs to the bathroom, because she’s right.

Tonight will be one for the books.

CHAPTER 30

CONNOR

“This is kinda creepy.”

Ben’s voice echoes through the empty hallways of Strong Hall. At least, I’m pretty sure it’s Ben. Our flyer told us to wear all black, so the twins aren’t color-coded the way they usually are. There are certain tells, though. Ben’s constant chillness. Alex’s stiff jawline.

I nod in agreement before I realize that they probably can’t see me in the shadows. “You’re not wrong,” I say.

It’s 9:15 PM, two minutes before we’re supposed to be here. Where exactly here, we don’t know. All we know is Strong Hall.

Alex stalks behind us as we move, eyes on constant alert. Thick, heavy steps. Yes, definitely Alex. “Are we sure this is right?” he asks.

“Yeah,” I answer. “It’s right.”

“There’s no one here.”

“We’re still early,” Ben points out.

“Are you sure you got the symbols right?”

“Yes,” I say, more than confident about that. “I’m sure.”

Alex stalls in the hall. “How did you get it again?”

“I showed it to Dana, who spotted the girl in the quad with the shirt, who told us.”

“And you’re sure she wasn’t lying?”

Ben and I stop, too. “Why would she lie about her shirt?” I ask.

“Not her,” Alex says. “Dana.”

I glance at Ben. He raises a brow.

“You think Dana lied about… seeing a symbol on a shirt?” Ben asks, trying to see logic in the claim.

“How do we know her Beta Kappa initiation doesn’t include ruining the initiation of a Delta Xi? Hm?” Alex bobs his head. “And how do we know that shirt girl wasn’t in on it the whole time? Hmm? I smell sabotage.”

I scoff. Ben does, too. “That doesn’t make any sense. Why would Delta Xi give us flyers that?—”

“How do we know they came from Delta Xi at all, eh?!” Alex’s voice echoes louder. “How do we know some Beta Kappas didn’t sneak into the house and plant those flyers in our clothes while we were serving cocktails and getting our asses pinched? I say we get out of here before we’re busted doing… whatever they’ve tricked us into doing!”

A throat clears behind us.

We spin in the dark, clinging to each other as we spot the black-robbed figure hovering in the center of the hallway.

“Ah!” Alex jolts back, bumping into my shoulder.
