Her smile is audible, sweet. “That’s more your area, Morgan,” she says.
“You’re not wrong,” I say, my brain sifting through split-second possibilities. “It’s Bid Day tomorrow. Does Beta Kappa have anything planned for initiation night?”
“I don’t know, officially.”
“Officially?”
“Courtney told me about a sleepover after initiation — if I get a bid, that is.”
“You will,” I say, sensing the doubt in her tone. “They’d be insane not to want you.”
“Maybe,” she says.
“Is that sleepover mandatory?”
“Probably not. Why?”
“Tell John and Rose you’ll be there. Come here instead.”
She gasps. “Oh…”
“Uh-huh,” I say.
“You’re a bad influence.”
I laugh. “Depends on who you ask.”
Dana goes quiet for a few seconds. Like before, I stay silent, letting her work through it herself.
“Okay,” she finally says.
“Okay?” I ask.
“Okay. Tomorrow night. I’ll come over and… stay with you.”
I release a quivering breath, not caring this time if she hears it. “Tomorrow night,” I repeat.
“Hey, Connor,” she says after a moment.
“Yes?”
“Thank you.”
“For what?” I ask.
“I know you didn’t want to, but…”
You’re wrong, Dana.
I wanted to. I’ve always wanted to.
“Well, if I don’t, someone else will,” I say instead, stealing from my sister. “Your highness.”
Dana laughs.
