“Oh, same.”

Another laugh. Another shot of lightning through my groin.

“Hey, Connor.”

“Yes?”

“Why did you call?” she asks.

I pause. “Because you told me to.”

“Is that the only reason?”

Nope.

“I wanted to hear your voice,” I say. No sense in lying about it. It’s the truth.

“Dana?” I ask when she doesn’t immediately respond.

“I’m here.”

“Is that okay?”

“It’s okay,” she says. I let my chest unravel, relieved. “This is all just so… strange.”

“I know what you mean. It’s nice, too, though. Right?” I add.

Please say it’s nice.

“Yeah. It’s nice,” she finally says.

I exhale silently. “Courtney’s leaving tomorrow.”

“I know. I’m gonna miss her, but I’m so happy for her, too.”

“My parents are going with her.”

A short pause. “Oh, yeah?”

“They’re staying until Saturday to help her get settled in New York.”

“Honestly, I’d demand my parents do the same if it were me,” she says. “I’d be a wreck.”

“You should come over,” I say.

Dana inhales sharply. “Come over?”

I smirk. “Tomorrow night. We could get through a lot of… lessons.”

Another breath, this one practically a gasp that fires all the way down my body. I don’t dare say a word.

“I don’t know,” she whispers.

“Why not?” I ask, keeping my voice playful. “Big house, all to ourselves.”

“It’s not that.” Thankfully, she chuckles. “I have no idea how to get that past my parents.”

“Ah,” I say. “Teenage mischief not your forte, eh, Kirby?”
