“I’ll drive… because I have got to see this!” Eileen laughed wildly, grabbing her purse, followed by Reese’s hand, as they left the house.

Two hours later, and zero replies to his text messages, he was putting his plan together and trying not to have a panic attack. Throwing up or getting sick would only delay his reunion, and he had a lot of groveling to do.

“This is a terrible idea…” Eileen muttered.

“Agreed,” Reese said grimly.

“Y’all are not giving me a big vote of confidence right now, and I’ve already maxed out on Imodium today and probably gonna O.D. on Dramamine because I’ve been puking and poopin’ soooo much. Let me tell you, having a blockage on my honeymoon would be the pits.”

“You mean the…”

“Don’t!” Eileen interrupted, holding up her hand and glaring at the two of them. “Just don’t. We all understand what you mean, and instead of focusing on your various bodily functions – can you please think of how you are going to pull off this stunt?”

“I’m gonna break into my own place,” Max said simply.

“I thought you said she had an alarm system – and a gun.”

“I hope the police don’t come…”

“I hope she doesn’t shoot me.”

“Me too,” Reese said grimly, looking at Eileen, who shook her head.

Max swallowed.

CHAPTER 12

ELANA

Saturday

Max didn’t come home.

Oh gosh, Elana was devastated at the realization, too. She kept expecting him to come back, to knock on her door, and start trying to talk himself out of this mess, but there was silence, and she had fallen asleep at some point. She let out a shuddering breath as she lay curled on her side on the bed, staring at the bedroom door.

She was emotionally worn out and had cried so many tears that the idea of crying anymore just hurt deep down inside. She still wore his ring, and it was tearing her up at the idea of taking it off for good. Was she living in La-La land… of course!

She knew that a wedding ring was supposed to be a symbol of commitment and love – and a very lonely part of her soul kept whispering that maybe he truly cared, while another voice claimed otherwise. To say she was struggling was an understatement.

Hearing the doorbell ring, she hesitated and wondered if it was Max because she’d heard his truck leave yesterday when she ordered him out but didn’t hear it pulling back in the driveway. Slowly getting up, feeling like her limbs were leaden, she opened the bedroom door and walked to the front room, peering through the peephole and sighed. Opening the door, she grimaced and quickly wiped her face on her sleeve.

“Carpenter,” she said bluntly.

“Carpenter…?” he replied gently, looking at her, and Elana swallowed at the implication of that single word reminding her that she’d married his brother – less than a day ago.

“Reese…”

“Look – I know it’s none of my business…”

Alert Bedroom Window

Reese got this look on his face and reached out, snatching her wrist and nearly tugging her out the front door.

“What are you doing?”

“Hedging my bets so you don’t pull a weapon on me.”

“What?”
