“You should take this back,” she whispered softly, putting the beloved pearls back in the bag. “They are too much.”

And heard Max curse hoarsely before he came to her side, kneeling beside her.

“Please,” he whispered, looking at her. “Please give me another chance to be an idiot around you. I can’t get you out of my head, and I want to see where this goes between us. Let me take you for coffee if that feels safer for you. We could go on a double date with someone you know. I just… I just want a chance to show you that I could be the guy to care for you – if this works out like I feel it might deep down inside.”

“Max, the pearls are too much money,” she said softly, looking at him. “You don’t have to try so hard or buy my attention. Just be yourself and relax.”

“I was myself last night, playful and stupid, and nearly blew my chance with you.”

“It was a bit much,” she agreed and gave him a sideways look, chuckling. “I don’t get it. You admitted you were being cheap with the roses, but then you turned around and spent this?”

“Stupid,” he blurted out, smiling at her warily. “I’m dumb.”

“You’re not dumb,” she replied. “You’re just trying hard to get seen… and I already see you. Let’s try this again and start over.”

“You got it.”

“If you were yourself, what would you do?” she whispered, looking at him beside her where he was kneeling. “If you could go anywhere or do anything, what would you do?”

“I’d grab a burger and…”

“Then let’s do that,” she urged softly. “Let’s grab a burger from Sonic, sit in the car, and talk for a while, just you and me.”

“You mean that?”

That hopeful smile was nearly her undoing.

“Sounds like heaven to this girl…” she smiled shyly. “I love their tots.”

“They are amazing,” he replied, smiling at her and reaching for her hand. “I’m going to goof up, but if I make you upset or screw up – I want you to talk to me… like this, like we are doing right now.”

“Fair enough.”

“There’s one other thing I’d do, if I could do anything in the world…” he whispered gently, looking up at her from where he knelt.

“Before you say it – it doesn’t have to do with sex, does it?”

“Nope,” he smiled and stood, taking the bag containing the strand of pearls from her.

“Wait, no, hang on, Max…” she protested, but he came to stand behind her desk chair, and she saw the expensive necklace descend in front of her eyes before she heard his voice whispering in her ear just to the left of her face.

“We’re keeping these,” he murmured softly and nuzzled her temple right before he fastened the clasp at the nape of her neck. “You are classy – and my classy girl needs a little something special from me.”

“It’s too much,” she protested nervously, touching the pearls as he stepped back in front of her.

“Guess that depends on the beholder… because I’d say it looks perfect to me.”

“Are you sure?”

“Are you done for the day?” he countered. “I know I interrupted your afternoon, but…”

“I’m not,” she apologized quietly. “I’ve got a little bit left to do.”

“Cool,” he smiled and nodded. “Take your time, and I’m gonna take a nap in the truck.”

“You can sit in here if you want.”

“Are you sure?”
