I grimaced. “Sorry, I changed my mind.”

I showed him the thriller book I’d picked up on the way and went to get a library card I was never going to use again and get the book checked out.

Rolling his eyes, he was quick to return Anna Karenina to its original place. I’d put sleeping pills in his tea, a much larger dose than was safe, and he’d still somehow gotten way too comfortable with being around me. As fun as he was, it made me uncomfortable. It was as if he was deliberately trying to provoke me to the point of no return, and that was going to cost him.

He needed to know his place. He was just a puppy—nothing more, nothing less.

We turned in opposite directions once we were outside. I saw him get in his car before I walked towards mine. He stopped by the gas station on our way home, and I took the opportunity to get to the house first.

With a wide grin, I waited for him.

Felix took his sweet time coming home. As soon as I heard his car pull up in the driveway, I sat comfortably on the couch in the living room. I crossed my legs, leaned back, and enjoyed myself. In one of my hands was a glass of whiskey neat, whilst my other hand was holding a gun. The object was familiar. It became a part of me a long time ago.

Even half asleep, I was able to shoot perfectly. As if it were a part of my body, the cold metal felt intimate. Without a gun, I was left with emptiness, as if I’d lost a part of myself. It wasn’t anything to be proud of, yet that was who I was. Being ashamed of myself wasn’t going to make my life easier.

“What is this?” He laughed nervously. “What are you doing?”

With a tilt of my head, I glanced at the gun. “Oh, this? You see, your behavior today was very irritating and although I understand you’re listening to your owner’s orders, there are things I can’t let pass.”

He’d brought a bag full of snacks. As his hands trembled, it fell to the floor, the contents of it spilling out. The day we met, Felix was aware I needed him. Hence, he wasn’t too afraid because in order for me to get out of prison, he had to bail me out.

However, as realization dawned upon his face, his dark eyes widened. His bottom lip quivered, and terror consumed him. I wasn’t playing around, and my smile was anything but warm and welcoming.

It was sadistic. He was terrified of me, and it reminded me of how much I liked having this power over people. He was backed into a corner; his life was in my hands. A desire to train this little puppy flew through my body like a firework.

With the gun, I pointed towards the other couch. “Sit down, puppy.”

Felix gulped loudly. I could’ve sworn a whimper slipped past his lips as he quickly listened to my command. His hands were on his lap, and he fidgeted with his fingers. He barely made eye contact; his head hung low.

“I’m not a forgiving person. In fact, you tried to push my boundaries, and that never worked out for anyone. Tell me, what should I do with you?”

Felix sat still. Not a single word came from him, and he tried to keep his shivering under control. It was rather funny seeing him squirm like that.

“How about this,” I started, raising the gun towards his head. “I’ll shoot with my eyes closed. Let your luck decide whether you live or not.”

He didn’t get a chance to respond or agree with my words. With closed eyes, I readjusted my aim and shot, without questioning it. A shot echoed in the room, and the smell of powder hit my nose. A low sigh, filled with desperation and fear, came from his lips.

I peeled my eyes open, to see the prettiest sight. A tear rolled down one of his cheeks, whilst the other one had a wound. The bullet had grazed his left cheek and his ear.

Immediately, I put the gun on the small table in front of me, sipping the whiskey as Felix tried to comprehend what the hell had just happened. As I straightened my back, it cracked slightly, an ache following quickly.

“Luck is on your side today, it seems,” I mumbled. “If you want to make this into a fun game, you can try killing me in the same way. If you succeed, you’ll live. If you miss me… Well, we both know what happens.”

“No, thank you.”

His voice was shaky, a whisper, as he hung his head low. The kid was traumatized and instead of feeling bad, I wanted to inflict more pain. However, it wasn’t the time.

“There’s a first-aid kit in the bathroom on the second floor. Fix your wounds and get the fuck out for today.”

Like a good puppy, he listened. It made me chuckle to see how he sprinted upstairs. It didn’t take him longer than fifteen minutes to walk past me again, turn on his car, and bolt. It was going to take a miracle, or a lot of money from Davorin, to bring him back.

In the meantime, I went into the bathroom to read the letter that I’d gotten from the library. It was the only place I was positive didn’t have any cameras. A cigarette rested between my fingers, a lighter next to me whilst I sat on the cold tiles.

A cloud of smoke left my lips, nicotine filled my lungs, and it was one of the most liberating feelings. It wasn’t healthy, but that was irrelevant. Someday soon, I would die, and it wouldn’t be from smoking and drinking alcohol every day.

The letter was filled with a lot of things I already knew. However, as of right now, she was the only person who I could trust on the inside. Technically, she was working under De Luca, the Italian don, but she owed me a favor, and this was her repaying her debt.

Day and night, she was putting herself in danger to get the exact location of my Father. The moment she found out, I would be the first one to know so I could put a bullet through his skull. Aleksei and Dominik might be pissed at me for life, but eventually they would understand that it had to be done by my hand.
