I went to the coffee shop and waited in line. It irritated me, having to wait in lines. Nevertheless, it was not something I had influence over.

“Hi, what can I get for you today?” The waitress, whose name tag said Kat, greeted me with a warm smile. Her dark eyes didn’t give out any indication of her smile being insincere.

“I’ll have an iced Americano to go, please.”

“Your name?”

“Lilith.”

Slowly, she nodded her head. It was as if a lightbulb had appeared above her head. “You can wait over there.” She pointed to a small table in the corner. “I’ll bring the coffee to you shortly.”

Lilith was a code name. I rarely used it, but today it was necessary. My eyes scanned the area, and there wasn’t a trace of the person I was supposed to meet. She wasn’t stupid enough to bail on me, but I couldn’t contact her to confirm the date, so I went the other route.

We met twice since I settled down in Texas, and meeting her was anything but pleasant. From the corner of my eye, I saw her. Our eyes locked, and she nodded her head and slipped through the door before we could even talk.

With a sigh, I sat down.

I tapped my finger on the wooden surface, impatience slowly kicking in. My eyes were on the window, watching as people walked past. Laughing, talking, taking pictures. It was enough to make my day go from bad to worse. Other people being happy was revolting to me. I glanced at my wristwatch, completely forgetting to check the time as my eyes caught a glimpse of something.

Amongst the diamonds that were on the bracelet, a fake one was there. Upon taking a closer look, a low laugh slipped past my lips. Motherfucker managed to put a tracker on my watch, too. I’d never been so grateful that she didn’t sit down with me.

That little bastard. One of those diamonds was worth more than his life.

“The coffee’s been paid for.”

Kat placed the beverage in front of me on top of a small, folded piece of paper. No one was around. Nothing but an address and numbers twenty-six and seventy-eight were written on the paper. It was in her handwriting with a small middle finger drawn underneath. It was definitely her.

“Excuse me,” I yelled out to the waitress as I stood up. “Could I use your phone for a moment?”

A quick search of the address told me that it was a library within walking distance.

The numbers must have meant the row number and book number. Thanking her, I took the coffee and walked out. It didn’t take me long to reach the library, but Felix was close behind me. It was getting way too annoying, but it was broad daylight in front of a library. There were too many eyes and too many cameras for me to act childish and kill him there.

The long hall was ahead of me.

“I’ve been very lenient towards you, puppy.”

My voice echoed. Glancing over my shoulders, Felix froze as our eyes met. He was confused and reluctant. Walking away was disobeying Davorin’s orders, yet coming closer to me was directly walking into his death.

“I have to do it.”

I rolled my eyes. It wasn’t anger—it was annoyance. If I let the annoyance marinate for a little longer, then I’d be able to turn it into fury and deal with Felix properly. In the meantime, he wasn’t going to stop snooping around.

“Fine,” I caved. “Come and help me out.”

“What exactly are you looking for?”

I blurted out the first title that came to mind. “Anna Karenina.”

Felix raised an eyebrow but didn’t question it further. I scanned the row numbers, found the one I needed, and headed that way. Little puppy went in the opposite direction. It gave me less than five minutes to find what I needed because he was the one that went to the right section.

Row twenty-six was all about history. School books and such were there. With a low sigh, I began counting the books. She could’ve put it somewhere easier to find. But as my eyes caught sight of the cameras, I smiled.

She was smart enough to put it where the dead angle was.

The history book that I was never going to read revealed a letter. The same middle finger was drawn on the back of it and earned a chuckle from me. It was sealed and so as not to risk Felix finding it, I hid it underneath my shirt and made my way towards him.

“Found it,” he announced, proudly.
