If the motion went through, the case would be limited to six months. She doubted the case would be resolved that quickly, but it was certainly worth trying. She turned her attention to the email.

Good Morning,

I write to you to refer to the case you have brought against my company. Such allegations are preposterous, and I will not have you tarnishing my company’s reputation by insinuating that we stole industry secrets.

If you continue along this path, I will be forced to take extreme action. You do not want to test me on this. If I wanted to, I could bury you. I suggest you withdraw your case now, before it’s too late.

Ms. St. Clair

St. Clair Foundation CEO

Alexa glared at her computer screen. So, their CEO was taking things personally, was she? This was a business interaction. She could have left it up to her lawyers to contact Alexa but instead she had decided to threaten her personally.

Well, Alexa wasn’t going to stand for that. St. Clair wanted to make things personal? Well, she could make it personal right back at her.

Her fingers clacked angrily against the keyboard as she typed out her response.

Good morning, Ms. St. Clair,

You will soon learn that I do not respond well to threats. Contrary to your apparent belief, this is a business matter and not a personal attack on you. I suggest you send any future communications to me through your lawyers, or you will be hearing frommylawyers about harassment.

You will not win this one and you know it. Your attempt to intimidate me into giving up only betrays you.

I suggest you take some time to reevaluate your decision. You can put a lot of company resources into fighting a battle you cannot succeed in, or you can cut your losses and move on. The choice is yours, but rest assured, if you choose to fight, I will make losing painful for you.

Ms. Rossi

Rossi Corporation CEO

Alexa punched the send button. She glowered at her computer screen for another twenty minutes, but she received no further emails from St. Clair. Wise of her. Alexa hadn’t been kidding about setting up a harassment charge.

She checked her phone to see if there were any more messages from Victoria. Even though it was the middle of the workday, she was still hopeful. As she looked, she saw that Victoria was typing. Alexa grinned. She could use a distraction from her work nonsense.

Emergency is handled, for now—at least, as much as it can be. It’s going to be a crazy few months for me.

Yeah, me as well. Let’s not talk about work? I get enough of that in my life. I could really use a break.

Alexa hoped Victoria would be okay with this. From what she understood of Victoria so far, her career was important to her. Maybe Victoria had as much of a problem as Alexa did with leaving work in the office.

Alexa didn’t really think she was up to even more work. When she dated, she wanted it to be time off, not more time to stress about things that she had only limited control over.

That was the reason she gave Victoria, and it was true, but there was more to it. Alexa had dated before, but she had found that any potential partners were inevitably more interested in her money and social standing than her as a person. She wasn’t going to make that same mistake again.

This time, she wouldn’t reveal who she was. She would simply say that she was a CEO and decline talking about work any further than that. Of course, with time, she would tell Victoria everything, but she wanted to make sure that Victoria liked her for her first, and not for what she could offer in terms of finances and reputation.

Victoria’s response came quickly.

We’re on the same page there. I’ve had enough of people seeing me as a CEO. I want to be seen as Victoria, the person. It’s a personal relationship I’m looking for, not a work one. It sounds like we could both use a break.

It was like Victoria was reading her mind. Did she really feel like that, or was she simply saying what she knew Alexa wanted to hear? It seemed almost too good to be true that she and Victoria were aligned in so many things, but she didn’t like to assume people were lying to her unless they had given her good reason to.

For now, she would continue to be hopeful.

She typed up another message.

Tell me more about yourself. Did you always know that you wanted to go into business?

No, actually. For the longest time, I wanted to be a doctor. You see, my sister had a lot of health issues. She was constantly in and out of hospital. I wanted to be a doctor so that I could help her.
