It was like living a dream. Alexa had never lived anywhere except on her family estate. She had been nervous about how she would handle not having her family as closely on hand as usual, but she had found that it wasn’t an issue. She still went over for lunch every Sunday and had calls with her siblings and parents often.

Victoria still needed to meet them. They had been putting off meeting each other’s family. Victoria wasn’t close with her family, but Alexa knew that she viewed her colleagues as surrogate family. That was why Victoria was hesitating to introduce them, Alexa was sure. They still hadn’t tainted their relationship with work, and for now, Alexa liked it that way.

She would share this part of herself with Victoria, but only once she’d figured out how to tell Victoria without making things weird between them. Victoria knew she ran a business, but had no idea that Alexa was one of the most prominent CEOs in her field. Would she look at Alexa differently once she knew? Alexa liked to think not, but she knew such things couldn’t always be helped.

That was the reason she had yet to introduce Victoria to her family. Alexa wouldn’t ask her parents to hide the truth, and it would soon come out that she was the leader of Rossi Corporation.

They had both been avoiding the subject. Alexa was glad that she and Victoria seemed to be on the same page as far as work was concerned. They hadn’t yet discussed a date for the inevitable conversation about work, but Alexa knew it was coming. She was nervous about it and tried not to think about it whenever possible.

“I’ll see you tonight.” Victoria ran a hand down Alexa’s cheek, sending pleasurable shivers through her body.

“See you tonight. Do you need to work late again?”

Victoria grimaced and nodded. “I’m sorry. I—”

“None of that. You don’t need to be sorry for things that you can’t control. To be honest, I could use the extra time at work as well. What do you say to a late dinner?”

Victoria leaned in for another kiss. “A late dinner sounds perfect. I’ll bring home dinner—you did breakfast. Tomorrow is Saturday; we can sleep in.”

“Good thing, too, because I intend to keep you up late tonight.”

Victoria’s eyes sparkled at the promise. “Well, now you’ve guaranteed that I’ll be watching the clock today.”

“I didn’t want to be the only one.”

They kissed once more before heading off to work.

In the end, they went to bed much earlier than anticipated. Both Victoria and Alexa were exhausted when they came home. As much as Alexa adored making love to Victoria, falling asleep in the comfort of her arms when they had both had a long day was just as good.

Alexa woke early to find that the bed was empty. Victoria was probably making breakfast.

She was on her way down to the kitchen when she heard Victoria’s raised voice coming from the office. They tried their best to keep work at work, but both of them had had occasion to use the home office from time to time.

Alexa was about to continue to the kitchen when she heard something that made her pause.

“… that Rossi bitch is at it again. How she can think she’ll actually pry that patent away from us is a mystery. She’s smart, but she’ll soon learn that she’s out of her depth. That patent belongs to the St. Clair Foundation. You do whatever you need to do to get this matter seen in court. The sooner we’re done with this sham, the better.”

Alexa was rooted to the spot. Horror spread through her as the meaning of the words hit her like an oncoming train.

That Rossi bitch… the St. Clair Foundation…

No. Surely not. She must have heard wrong. It couldn’t be what it sounded like.

It could, a small voice in her head said. She and Victoria had never discussed work, and she already knew that Victoria was a CEO.

Alexa finally forced her feet to move as she staggered back to their bedroom. She grabbed her phone and did a google search forSt. Clair Foundation CEO. Victoria.

She closed her eyes for a moment, scared of what she would see.

When she opened them, her worst fears were realized. There was Victoria’s picture, under the title of CEO for the company that was Alexa’s most bitter business rival.

Alexa thought she might throw up. How had this happened?

More importantly, what was she going to do now?
