“What are you looking so worried about?”
Victoria blushed and forced herself to look into Jillian’s eyes. “You should be able to guess.”
Things with Rossi Corporation had been heating up steadily over the past few weeks. It was becoming a bloody legal battle that went back and forth, favoring first one side and then the other. Victoria had no idea how it would go and had spent many a sleepless night worrying about it.
That, however, was not what she was stressing about right now.
“Nuh-uh. I know what your work stress face looks like it, and this isn’t it. What’s up?”
Victoria sighed. Jillian knew her too well. “It’s… it’s Alexa.”
“Did you two have a fight?”
“No, just the opposite. Things are going well. Jillian, I think I’ve found the one.”
“Victoria, that’s amazing! Why do you look so anxious about it? Do you not think she feels the same?”
“No, I’m fairly certain she does. It’s just… well, we’re struggling to find time for each other. We’re both having a hard time at work, and we’ve had to cut back our dates to twice a week.”
“That’s still quite often, considering the hours you work. And you text her every day—I’ve seen you at it.”
“Yeah, but we had built up to four times a week. Twice just isn’t enough, regardless of how many texts we send.”
“You’re not looking to take a step back, are you? The Foundation needs you, especially now.”
“Of course not. I would never do that. But I want to spend more time with her.”
“So you’re stressing because you want two opposing things and can’t find a way to make them work together.”
“No, that’s not it. I’ve found a way to make them work together. I’m just not sure if Alexa will go for it. I worry I’ll freak her out.”
“Okay, now you have me confused. Care to speak in plain English?”
“I want to ask Alexa to move in with me,” Victoria said in a rush.
Jillian’s mouth popped open. “You’ve only been dating six weeks!”
“I know.” Victoria let her head fall into her hands. “I know, it’s way too soon, but she’s all I can think about, Jillian. Ineedher to be close to me, and more than twice a week. Falling asleep and waking up with her… it’s like nothing else in the world.”
“You don’t even know what she does. She could be anyone.”
“I know she runs a business,” Victoria said defensively.
“Yeah, but neither of you have shared any of your work lives with each other. From what you’ve told me, Alexa’s career is equally as important to her as yours is to you. How well can youreally know each other when you keep such vital parts of your lives separate?”
“It works for us. We spend enough time at work. We don’t need to be involved in work when we’re with each other. I mean, I will tell her, at some point, but not now. I’m enjoying letting her get to know the non-work me. To be totally honest, I’m enjoyingfindingthe non-work me, myself. She’ll have to get to know the CEO-me at some point, but right now, things are so good. I don’t want to bring work into this just yet.”
“Well, it’s your decision, but I still say it’s too soon.”
“I know. Do you think I should wait, then?”
“That’s not for me to decide. I will say that you’re happier than I’ve seen you in a long time. I just don’t want you to scare her off. It sounds like you’ve got a good one there, and you don’t want to lose her. I can’t tell you how likely that is; I don’t know her. You’ll have to judge that for yourself.”
Which was exactly why Victoria was pacing up and down her office, glancing anxiously at the clock every few minutes. She was due to see Alexa in just two hours. She had a key to her house that she had copied just yesterday. However, she was plagued by doubts.
They could keep going as they were. Things were good between them. Victoria wanted more, but that didn’t make what they had right now bad. It would probably be smarter to keep the status quo for a few months, but her heart rebelled at such a logical notion.
By the time she left the office for the day, Victoria had come to no conclusion. She drove home clutching the steering wheel tightly, still not sure what she was going to do.
