"You should have let them kill me," he groaned, blood leaking from his mouth.

"No. You've saved me more times than I can count."

"Cheap ramen isn't worth you trading your honor," he said.

"Don't worry, I'll keep my honor," I said, wiping the blood from his face.

Present day…

I remembered the blood on my hands; the feeling of hot, sticky fluid that quickly turned into flaking stains would never leave my memory.

I reached into the sink, finding all the dishes finally gone. I let out a breath and pulled the plug. I wasn't sure how long I'd been cleaning, but the process helped me figure out a lot of what was going on in my head.

I could hear Julia talking to her mother in the other room. Her mother didn't say much, mostly just the odd noise to indicate she was listening.

The sound of it reminded me of my mother before she inevitably passed away from sadness.

How long had it been since I thought of her? Of my father? Of the reason I'd gotten caught up with the Yakuza in the first place.

I gritted my teeth and shoved the feelings down. I couldn't get soft now. I had a man to kill. And I never failed.

And, of course, aside from killing Harris, there was the other side of my mission that I hadn’t told her about.

Chapter fourteen

Julia

????

I could feel hiseyes on me again. Burning. Never stopping.

Harris.

Why wouldn't he leave me alone? He'd been stalking me since my sister's funeral, watching me from afar and waiting for ... something?

What was he waiting for?

My vision blurred. I needed to figure out where I was. It seemed like the coffee shop, but something wasn't right.

Was I dreaming?

Harris' gaze raked over my skin like a thousand tiny needles.

Without warning, he emerged from the shadows, dressed in black, with a scarf up over his nose and mouth. He had a baseball hat pulled down to shield his face from the light.

I didn't think. I just ran.

The world shifted around me; the streets faded to colorful blurs as I struggled to put distance between us. Harris pursued me, running faster and faster as the sounds of his footsteps echoed in my ears.

I could feel his desperation, and I knew that he would catch up to me eventually. I had to lose him somehow.

Suddenly, I spotted a small alleyway leading deeper into the city. Without hesitation, I sprinted down the narrow passage, my heart pounding against my chest. I heard Harris' heavy breathing as he followed closely behind. The darkness enveloped me, and I could barely see a thing.

As I reached the end of the alley, I slammed into the brick wall, my body colliding with it hard. I gasped for air, feeling the cold sweat trickling down my forehead.

The walls extended up around me, higher and higher, until they blocked out the sky and left me in the dark.
