“You must be some type of stupid to hitch yourself to Marci Walsh.”

I elect to ignore the comment. If I reach over, grab the back of his head, and ram his nose into the dashboard, he’ll get blood everywhere. And I’ll get fired. And the reason Marci and I struck up the rules in the first place will cease to exist, because no way will I make sheriff after emulsifying Deputy Dickhead’s face.

“She’s always going to cause trouble for you.”

I’m circling toward the diner without even realizing it, and I force myself to put on the indicator and take a different road.

Davis leans forward a little.

“Just because you got married doesn’t make you sheriff material, especially since you chose her. She’s a piece of trash with a piece of trash family, and the rest of Heatstroke knows it. They?—”

I hit the brakes hard.

Davis’ face hits the dashboard with a satisfying thwack. Not enough to break bones, but enough to leave a nasty mark on his nose.

“Ow, what the fuck?”

“Cat in the road,” I say, and continue driving. “What dumb shit were you talking about? I wasn’t paying attention.”

“Fuck you, asshole.”

I smile.

“I can’t describe how much I don’t give a fuck about your opinion of my wife,” I say. “Other than to say that if you disrespect her again, you’ll find out how strong that seatbelt is.”

“Your wife,” he scoffs. “Come on, dude, do you think I was born yesterday? We both know she’s not your wife.”

“Live in your dreamworld,” I say. “She’s mine. Ain’t a damn thing you can do about it.”

“I arrested her lowlife brother this morning.”

Fuck. That’s not good.

I slow the car, my thoughts turning that over. That’s bound to happen because there’s enough evidence to prove that Billy stole that car. And now that Marci’s my wife, I’m connected to him.

Dickhead is right, Billy is a liability to our plans. And when Marci finds out, she’s going to be furious.

“I’m telling you,” Davis says, “she’s bad news. That family is bad news. Nobody’s going to support a man with a wife like that. They won’t want you in as sheriff while you’re bound to that family.”

“Then why do you give a fuck about me marrying her?” I ask. “Doesn’t that work out in your favor?”

“I don’t give a fuck. I’m warning you as a friend.”

“We’re not friends,” I say. “I choose my friends carefully.”

Davis opens his mouth to say something that will likely lead to an altercation, but my phone rings again before he can. I pull over and park the squad, then remove my phone from my pocket.

“Seriously, Taylor? More personal calls during work hours?”

“It’s my wife,” I say, and then I get out of the squad and walk over to the sidewalk. “Angel? What’s wrong? Has something happened? Do you need me down there?”

“No,” she says. “I—This is dumb. I shouldn’t have called you at work.”

“What’s going on?”

“Nothing. Billy was arrested. He needs bail money. I didn’t know who to call. Shit, I don’t even know why I’m calling you.”

I grit my teeth.
