Page 46 of Fake in Love

“Shit,” she whispers. “This is it. The first real test.”

“We’ve got this. My favorite color?”

“Green. Mine?”

“Purple. Favorite animal?”

“Cat. Same for me,” Marci whispers as we approach the entrance to Heatstroke Park. “You like beers, but you’re partial to a mojito.”

“Margaritas. You want to visit Rome one day because you love pasta. Your favorite flavor of ice cream is mint because you’re a heathen who likes eating toothpaste.”

“At least it’s not vanilla,” she says, giving me a helping of her most bombastic side-eye.

“Trust me, Angel, that’s the only thing about me that’s vanilla.”

“Not that I’ll ever find out,” she says. “Because of rule number one.”

“We should write those down.”

And tear them up. Burn them. She’s so fucking gorgeous.

Marci swallows.

“I’m nervous.”

“Look,” I say, “just smile and say nice stuff about me. Dig deep.”

She laughs, that whispery, breathy laugh that makes my dick twitch and roll in my jeans.

“You like animals.”

“Exactly.”

“And you care about your family.”

Wait, is she serious? She finds that attractive about my personality?

“You’re funny too, in your own way. Even if you are a dick.”

“Sounds like you’re warming up to me, Angel,” I say.

“Just trying to come up with waysnotto despise you, Taylor.”

We approach the group of gathered off-duty deputies, Davis among them, laid out on blankets or sitting on park benches. The sheriff looks up from where he’s grilling meat and tips his aviator sunglasses down his nose to get a better look at us. He’s a future version of Nate, thicker around the middle, with the same asshole frat boy swagger.

“Well, I’ll be,” he says, breaking the sudden quiet.

“This has got to be a joke,” Deputy Dickface says.

“Only joke around here is you willingly buying that shirt.”

I gesture to the flame decals besmirching the fabric.

Marci snorts a laugh. I lift her hand to my lips and brush a kiss over her soft skin. She lets out the tiniest of sighs.

I can’t tell if it’s fake. I don’t want it to be.

I loop my arm around Marci and draw her to my side as we walk toward one of the nearby trees. I lay out our blanket in the shade and then make sure Marci gets on it comfortably before joining her.
