Bliss

I take a deep breath as I set down my favorite mascara. “I got this.” I tell myself giving myself a reassuring nod. My second session with the asshole is in an hour. I was kind of surprised he didn’t cancel, demanding another tutor.

Tugging on my hunter green sundress, I glance back to my mirror giving another nod. My hair is in waves courtesy of my lovely bed. India always asks how I pull off bed head like a super model. What can I say, I literally wake up like this. My makeup is light, I didn’t overload the contour this time, and I doubt my glittering highlight will pull secrets from Cuba. Spinning on my strappy nude wedges, I grab my messenger bag, slipping it over my shoulder.

India is lying on the couch when I walk out, she glances up when I grab my keys.

“Don’t you look like a snack.” She grins up at me. “Hot date?”

Frowning, I look back down at my dress, the strings tied into bows on the top of my shoulders, the waist wrapped with my favorite thin brown belt, the hem stopping mid-thigh. My arrow charm sits at the base of my neck, this time joined with other small gold necklaces. Gold bracelets stacked on my right wrist clacking against each other. I look normal, I didn’t go out of my way to get too dressed up, not for him.

Shrugging, I look back to her. “No hot date, I have a session. It’s just a dress.”

“And it’s just Cuba Knight. Come on, girl.” India raises an eyebrow, pursing her lips. “You want the D.”

I flip her off. “I’m not you, hoe.” Then a thought comes to me. “Unless-“

“Hell no.” She cut me off. “I might be very giving with my vagina, but she has not been that blessed in her voyage. Girls –“

Holding up a hand, I stop her. “Shh, remember, I don’t want to know.” I don’t want to hear about his sex life.

She bites back a smile and waves her fingers at me. “Well, have fun, hope he’s not too much of an asshole. You got this, B Money.”

Shaking my head, I open the front door. “Stop watching Wild ’n Out. I’ll see you later.”

I leave before she can reply. I refuse to admit to her or anyone that I find Cuba attractive. If he wasn’t such an asshole he’d look even better and that can be dangerous.

Campus is quiet when I get there, it usually is during the summer, but with four weeks until September, students will start appearing soon enough. That reminds me, we only have six more sessions, three more weeks and it will be over. I’ll probably never see him again and good riddance, I just hope he can at least be cordial, unlike last week.

I stop by a vendor that’s close to the library and grab a bottle of water. I think I’ll skip the coffee today, besides, I had at least three cups earlier this morning, and I don’t need any more caffeine.

“Bliss.” A familiar voice calls my name.

I turn and see Dex standing a few feet from me, his hands in pockets. He seems to have just left the gym, his grey shirt has sweat marks. I haven’t spoken to him since last week. Sure, he’s called and text but what is there to say?

I arch an eyebrow. “Dex.”

He takes a few steps closer to me, and I tighten my hold on the strap of my bag.

“I’ve been trying to reach you.” He has the nerve to look sad. “Are you really going to throw the last six months away?”

Shaking my head, I can’t believe that came out of his mouth. “Wow, you are truly mistaken. I recall you throwing the last six months away, not me.”

His blue eyes narrow. “You said you forgave me.”

Oh boy, great, this would happen now. Forcing a small smile, I grit my teeth. “No, I didn’t.”

He takes another step, reaches out and grips the wrist of my free arm tightly. “Baby, you must have forgot, before you left we talked about it, you said yes when I asked if we were good.”

I calmly glance to my wrist where he still has a hold of me. “I would let go of me if I were you, Dex.” Flicking my eyes to his and holding them there. “Let. Go. Now.”

Dex smirks but doesn’t let go. I’m two seconds away from putting him on his ass, when I hear another familiar voice, and I groan inside. I look behind Dex and suck in a breath when I see hazel eyes glaring at us.

“She said let go.” Cuba’s hands grip his backpack straps.

Dex drops my wrist and swings around. “Mind your own-“ He steps back, almost pushing me. “Shit, Cuba, I didn’t know you were back,” he says casually, as if he was not just acting crazy a second ago.

Cuba gives him a one shoulder shrug. “You’re so observant, Dex.” His eyes flick to me then to Dex. “Are you done harassing my tutor?” He almost sounds bored.
