Blue watches me intently. She gives me a small, reassuring smile as if to say,You don’t have to keep postponing it, I can take whatever they throw at me.

I wish that I could tell her I don’t want to do this, even despite her enjoyment of the punishment for the lying about to come, but I know I don’t have to. There’s trust in her eyes that wasn’t there before last night.

“Have we met prior to The Games?” I begin, Blue’s head tilting to the side as she gauges the question.

“No,” she answers. I watch the question get marked green, the polygraph remaining flatlined.

“Have you met anyone present on the island prior to The Games?” I frown at the trick question. Technically, every player has met someone present on the island, as recruiting is necessary to gain Players. And all the Players have met each other prior to the island on the boat here. They’re trying to catch her in a lie in knowledge that all Players have.

Blue’s expression deepens in thought as she catches what I did.

“Yes,” she answers simply.

The question marks green, but I know what comes next, and there isn’t much hope from here that she’ll pass with flying colors.

“Do you have the best interest of The Games in mind?”

Blue frowns. She inhales a measured breath in through her nose, and hesitates only a moment before answering. “Yes.”

Spike.

Red paints the question, and the room goes silent as the polygraph makes an alarming sound. She seems to want to try and remain calm, focused, in the hopes it won’t read a lie, but these things are difficult to trick. The polygraph sends a shock to the pads placed on her inner thighs and Blue flinches in her seat, her head falling back, mouth falling open as a strangled breath comes from her lips.

I’m no fool. I see that there was an enjoyment in the sensation. Her chin slowly falls forward, hair cascading down her face as her eyes light up with pleasure.

The voltage is only going to get higher from here.

I continue. “Do you have your Advocate’s best interest in mind?”

“Yes.”

Green. Easy. But it still warms me to see it as evidence that I’m not the only one feeling something substantial between us.

Blue catches my eye. I see everything in them that I saw last night.

Growing devotion.

“Would you betray your Advocate to win?”

“No.”

Green.

I can’t deny I had concerns about that question, with whatever winning meant to Blue. Whether that was going through the games and winning the pool of money, or winning in her own way by destroying the Echelon Society.

“Has your Advocate given you an advantage in the games?”

A sharp inhale, and Blue stills. She works her best to compose herself. “No.”

Spike. Red. A shock is sent through the pads again, enough to make Blue’s fingers grip the arms of her chair as her head cranes backward, back arching. Her chest heaves with heavy breaths, and I expect her gaze to be weakened, even nervous for the coming events, but they’re alight with curiosity, as if begging for more.

“Have these advantages won you games?”

Blue mulls over the question, her fingers gripping the arms tighter. I can see her thoughts churning. When a smirk lifts the edge of her beautiful mouth, I know she’s found a loophole through the lie. “No.”

Green lights up the question.

She’s thinking of when I left her, when she had to fend for herself. She’s learning about the polygraph. It spiked ever so slightly, but not enough to trigger a lie.
