My phone lights up with a text on my workbench, and my eyes slide to the screen.

Luca.

I stare down at it while I wipe my hands on my rag. We’ve been training intensely this week, and with the exception of a boxing ring make-out session, that’s all we’ve been doing. So, when I feel a bit of excitement creep in at seeing his name, I sit with it for a moment.

During the week he has made it known that he is going for a drink after hockey tonight. I’ve ignored him since I don’t care, but then he just pokes at me about how I’ll have to train without him, and that I’ll apparently miss him.

Fucking Luca.

I pick up my phone and slide my thumb across the screen to read his text.

Luca

Just a friendly lil reminder you’ll be all alone tonight *crying face emoji*

I sigh and lock my screen. But before I can set it down, he texts again.

Unless you want a workout of a different kind later tonight…?

That excited feeling takes root again as I look down at his text, and tap out my reply.

Let me know when you’re done.

Nope. You want this ass, you gotta come for a drink.

Those are my terms. Take it or leave it.

I sigh again, sitting down on a stool. Of course he can’t just make this easy. I don’t know his hockey buddies, it will just be awkward as fuck.

Tim laughs at something Jake said so I look up to see them joking around as Jake tosses a rag at him.

“Watch it, bud, or maybe I can get Ty to do some of that striking on you,” Tim jokes as he smiles at me.

I chuckle as Jake holds up his hands in surrender.

I guess feeling uncomfortable doesn’t always end up being a bad thing…

Where?

THIRTY-THREE

I subtly try to check my watch while I take a drink of my beer, but Dan notices.

He chuckles. “You seem anxious.”

“No, I’m not,” I say, a little too quickly.

Dan smirks, leaning back in his chair. “Ok.”

I sigh, and glance around the bar. Some of the other guys from our hockey team are here as well, but they’re being rowdy at the bar. I see shots being poured and I shudder at the thought of downing those tonight. I don’t have any desire to go into work hungover tomorrow, so I’m glad Dan and I chose to sit away from them and take it easy.

That, and so I can allow someone else to ease their way into a social situation. I’m sweet like that.

Dan is still eyeing me, so I roll my eyes, and he laughs.

“Fine, ok, yeah. Ty is just a… well, he’s like this shy little baby bird that could kill you at any moment, so…” I shrug, “it’s just a little wild that he’s even coming here.”

His eyebrows raise, and he nods slightly. “That’s… interesting.”
