His head turns towards me, and I can just faintly make out his features in the dark. And having this blanket of darkness helps me take this step.

I take in a big breath, and exhale. “The unicorn is for me.”

His brows draw together. “Huh?”

“My tattoo.” I nod. I’m in this now, I need to do it. “I said it was for my sister, but… it’s for me.”

His lips press together as he observes me.

“The unicorn is my favorite animal. The whimsy, the magic, the colors… I just love them so much.”

Ty is silent as I take in another big breath. I just bared my fucking soul to him and told him something I’ve never told anyone. This is huge, and I feel so much lighter.

“You…” he says slowly, “you know they’re not real… right?”

I sigh. “Yeah, I know.” I turn my head to look up to the sky again. “But they’re still fucking awesome, and I wish they were.”

I feel his eyes on me for a beat longer before he also turns back to the stars. “Ok then.”

Relief rushes through me that he is accepting of my secret. I’m not quite sure why I felt like I needed to tell him this, but it just feels right. And I’m glad I did. “God, that feels good to get off my chest.”

Ty lets out a breath of amusement.

“Now you tell me a secret.” I look at the moon again, thanking her for giving me the kick in the ass I needed.

“Like what?”

“I don’t know…” I shrug. “Let the moon guide you.”

“I don’t have any secrets.”

“Oh, Tyler. We both know that’s not true.” I turn my head to him, but he keeps looking up, and just shakes his head.

“Ok, well, I guess I’ll just start guessing then.” I take a big breath in, ready to get into this.

But he stops me before I can get my first guess out. Which was going to be that he’s a secret Swiftie.

“No, for the love of fuck, do not.” He rolls his head towards me, and I give him a big smile.

But my smile falls, as my eyes adjust in the dark and take in the look on his face. I see something past the usual hardness, and I think it’s fear.

“What?” I ask quietly.

I see his hand fidget, and I refrain from reaching out to grab it.

“I have no fucking idea how to do this,” he says.

I nod, knowing what he means.

This. Us.

Based on what he’s shared with me so far, I can see how this is probably all new to him. And not just the dick part of it.

Both of us are silent for several moments as we look at each other. I’m surprised by this level of vulnerability he’s sharing with me, but I also know that’s likely all I’m going to get.

Eventually, my smile returns. “You just need to let the moon show you the way.”

It may be dark, but I absolutely can see the eye roll as he turns his head away again.
