“You send a lot of selfies,” he says simply, as if that’s an explanation for anything.

But I smirk in satisfaction. “You clearly like that.”

Ty scoffs and then tilts his head towards the street. “I work around the corner.”

I nod thoughtfully, still trying to figure out why he’s here, and trying hard not to let my hopes get too high. “You didn’t go to the gym tonight.”

His arms are still crossed as he leans against my Jeep, but I see the tension enter his shoulders and his fingers grip his biceps. “No.”

“Why?”

He stares back at me, and my heart rate quickens.

I drop my hockey bag to the ground and take a step towards him. “Why didn’t you go to the gym tonight, Ty?”

Even in the dark, I see something flash through his dark brown eyes. And I think that something is vulnerability.

He blinks it away and raises his chin slightly. “Why did you bake for a fucking bakery last night?”

Touché.

But I stay quiet and tilt my head as I observe him, needing him to answer my question first.

A breath escapes him as he drops his eyes from mine. “You’re in my head.”

Warmth spreads through my chest, but I just nod.

Ty brings his eyes back to mine, and I’m surprised to see the vulnerability remains. “I can’t let you distract me. I’m here for a reason, and I can’t fuck this up.”

“Why do you think you’ll fuck it up?” I ask.

His jaw clenches as he continues to stare back at me.

I step forward again, getting dangerously close to him. “You liked it.”

He blinks and starts to lower his gaze once again, but I take the final step towards him so there are mere inches between us. “Admit it, Ty. You want this.”

His eyes flick between mine, and I smirk as I see the heat building within him. The same heat I feel inside myself.

Ty slowly raises his hand and wraps it around my throat. My chin lifts, allowing him to take hold of me, and my heart thunders. He takes his lower lip between his teeth as his eyes drop to his hand, the pressure on my throat slowly increasing.

Suddenly, he grips me tight and turns, pressing my back against the Jeep. “I’ve been trying to figure out why it’s you. You of all people piss me off more than anything, but it’s you who also pushes me to go against everything I know.”

I take a breath in, my throat straining against his hand. Now that we’ve switched spots, I can barely see his face in the dark. But the tone of his voice tells me there’s a hardness in his eyes.

“Like I said before, Tyler,” I say in a low voice, keeping my eyes on the darkness that has taken over him, “there’s a reason I get under your skin.”

He swallows hard and nods, gripping my throat even tighter and pulling a small wheeze from me.

“I don’t know why I’m here.”

The softness of his voice, in contrast with his dominating stance and tight grip, is alarming.

I reach my hand out and run my fingers down his abs. “I do.”

He gazes back at me, and I wish I could see his eyes. Just when I think he’s going to step backwards, he closes the small distance between us, and his lips are on mine.

Our kiss is messy and heated as he presses me against the Jeep with his body, and I pull him in for even more. As his hand falls from my throat, I take a deep breath in, and a surge of electricity runs through me.
