Hens nods, chewing his mouthguard before sliding it into place with a smile.

Fuck this asshole.

“Begin.”

Take him to the ground.

Fast and deadly.

I don’t even think as I duck and rush him, smashing into his waist and taking him down.

The roar of the crowd pushes through my focus, and sounds over the thump of his back hitting the floor.

It’s a frenzy of punches between us as we fight on the ground, but I’m controlling this. And I know that the second I get my leg over his waist, I’m going to have him in an armbar.

He manages to get a leg away from me, but I still have full control of his arm, even though I’m underneath him. He pulls his knee under him and gets on all fours.

And I’m aware of what he’s going to do.

He wants to land a knee to my head.

I push back to create more distance between us, causing him to push up onto his knees and lift his hands off the floor.

I briefly think I’m in the clear, as it’s illegal to knee if his hands are off the floor and I’m down.

But he’s dirty.

I see his knee coming and try to lift my head to avoid it.

But his knee lands on the back of my head.

And everything goes black.

FORTY-THREE

My leg won’t stop bouncing as I chew my thumb nail, my eyes glued to the end of the hospital hallway.

Rosa slides her hand over my knee and squeezes gently.

I turn to look at her, dropping my hand from my mouth.

She smiles softly. “He’s ok.”

I nod, but the worry doesn’t let up. I still don’t know what’s actually going on, since they kept Ty in the hospital overnight to assess and monitor him. All I know is that he has a concussion. But that knee, right to the back of his head…

Eventually, Max comes out of the room at the end of the hallway, and makes his way towards us. The entire team is here, and we all stand as he enters the waiting area.

“He’s good to go home,” he says, offering us all a small smile. “He’s being referred to a doctor in St. Louis to be seen early this week, to further evaluate him and make sure we’re not dealing with post-concussion syndrome, and to eliminate any risks of second impact syndrome.” His eyes land on me. “It was a nasty blow to a vulnerable area… he needs the all clear before he resumes any kind of training.”

I nod, glancing down the hall again to the room where Ty is.

Noah gently pats my back, and Max nudges me.

I reluctantly bring my eyes to him and he gives me a sympathetic smile. “He’s going to be ok.”

“And… his future in fighting, if…” Elijah asks tentatively.

Max shakes his head. “We’ll deal with that if we need to.”
