His eyebrows lift with surprise and uncertainty. “Really…”

I nod seriously. “Mm-hm. I watch it before every fight.” I hop off the bed to grab my laptop. “There are some sick fights in here that get me all fired up. It’s my pre-fight ritual.”

Ty watches as I set the laptop up on the bed he’s sitting on. “Warrior?”

I shake my head. Even though that is an amazing MMA movie… that’s not the one.

“Rocky?” he asks, eyeing me as I grab my pasta and coconut water from the other bed to sit next to him.

“Nope.” I reach out to hit play on the laptop, and Mulan begins.

Ty sighs. “Another fucking cartoon.”

“Oh, fuck off.” I roll my eyes. “Mulan is a fucking warrior and has proven herself, through her ability to fight, as she was considered a disgrace to her family.” I take another bite of my pasta. “It’s empowering.”

Ty is silent for a moment, and I can feel his eyes on me as I keep mine on the computer screen. Yeah… I like this movie because it kind of hits close to home. But also, because Mulan is just a straight up badass.

“Fine,” Ty says, leaning back against the headboard.

“Fine,” I mock him, leaning back as well. But I smile widely. “I knew you liked animated movies.”

He scoffs, shaking his head. “I don’t.”

“Bullshit.”

“I don’t.”

“You think they’re magical.”

“Says the guy wearing unicorn socks.”

“Says the guy who bought unicorn socks.”

“For you.”

“Aw. So sweet.”

“Fuck you.”

“I wish,” I say with a forceful sigh.

We’re both silent for a moment, before taking another bite of our food. Fucking is unfortunately not in the cards for tonight. But after tomorrow… it’ll be fuck city and my ass will be ready.

“So,” I glance at him, “how do you feel about Josh Hall?”

“Hens,” he says, “and whatever. He’s an idiot, but I can manage him. I managed you for years, this is nothing.”

I chuckle. “Yeah.” I watch as Mulan tries to pour some tea, and it all goes terribly wrong. “He thinks he knows your weakness.” I turn to look at him. “But he doesn’t know about the tiger’s punch.”

The corner of his lips tilt up as he looks back at me. “Fast and deadly.”

“Fast and deadly.” I nod. “And, when you do win, we’ll celebrate.”

His eyes soften, as they drop briefly to my smile. He nods with a soft smile of his own. “Yeah.” He then quickly switches back to work mode. “How are you feeling about Brad Eastin?”

“Good.” I nod enthusiastically. “I’m hoping I can keep him up for most of it, but I’m feeling good for our fight on the ground. I’m not totally sure what I’m walking into with him, but that’s ok. I’ll be controlling this fight, no matter where it goes.”

Ty nods, and I swear I see pride behind those dark eyes. “You will.”
