My little heart dances as the three bubbles appear right away.

Ty

Just finished a run.

Of course you’re working out on Christmas Eve

Maybe now you can watercolor

What the fuck are you talking about?

Just trying to give you ideas of fun things to do. It worked out well last time. *star emoji*

Don’t you have a fancy party to attend?

“Luca.”

I look up from my phone to see my father standing before me, with a man and a woman on either side of him.

“You remember my old colleagues, Nancy and Henry?”

“Yes, hi.” I smile, sliding my phone back in my pocket and shaking their hands.

“I haven’t seen you in quite some time,” Nancy says with a smile. “I remember when you used to come into your father’s office as a little boy.”

I chuckle. “Yeah, me too. I also remember getting in trouble there a lot.”

Henry and Nancy laugh and my dad smiles, taking a drink of his scotch.

“So, your father was telling us you moved to St. Louis for work?” Henry asks. “What is it you are doing there?”

“Oh, I moved for-” I start, but Dad cuts me off.

“Luca is currently teaching out there, gaining some wonderful experience in a large school district.” He smiles at me, and I try to keep my fake smile in place as well. “It will be helpful for him to build his network and skill set to work his way up in private schools.”

“Oh, that’s fantastic,” Nancy says, turning to me. “You have that same determination and drive as your parents.”

I give her a tight smile and decide to push my luck a little. Because this is really starting to piss me off. “I do. I’m very thankful I inherited their motivation and work ethic, as without it I definitely wouldn’t have made the move to St. Louis to go after my real passion, which is MMA.”

Henry furrows his brow. “MMA?”

I nod, sipping my scotch. “Mixed Martial Arts.” I take in the confused look on his and Nancy’s faces. “Cage fighting,” I offer, as a way to simplify things for them, and piss my dad off.

And it works, as he glares at me.

“Oh, wow.” Nancy literally clutches her pearls with wide eyes.

“Ah, I do remember hearing about you doing this now.” Henry smiles between me and Dad, who quickly slaps on a smile. “I heard you were quite good at it.”

“I was chosen by a professional fighter to come train with him, so I couldn’t pass up that opportunity,” I say. “I’m training for a fight-”

“Henry,” Dad cuts me off, pointing to Henry’s glass. “You need a refill. Come, we’ll top you both off, and I would love to hear about the renovations you have done at your beach house.”

He guides them towards the bar but turns back to me before leaving. “Enough of this. We are trying to help you, stop acting like a child. Now go talk to Anthony. Your mother has worked hard on setting up this opportunity for you.”

I sigh, watching him walk back into the party with his fake charisma and charm.

If I could walk right out that front door and never come back, I would. I am not meant for this shit.
