“I know, but she’s never really been a sister to you, has she?” Blanca embraces me. I’m sobbing in her arms, not only because she’s making a valid point, but she’s making me doubt the time I’ve spent with Diego.

He has his Japanese deal, and I played the dutiful wife, but as Cristina said, I’m not really his wife.

So, what now?

I promised myself I would never have my heart broken again. The first time, Belén helped break it and my cousins helped mend it. I hope they don’t have to help me mend it again.

Because the more I talk about the last few weeks, there’s no doubt in my mind I’m not just falling for Diego. I’ve well and truly fallen.

Diego

My associate said Leticia has been with her cousins for over three hours. Call me paranoid, because we’re no longer in Japan, but it doesn’t mean that I still don’t worry about her and want her to be safe. I have him following her all the time, just in case she needs him.

I’ve checked in, in Tokyo and there’s no reason for me to think that she can’t be attacked again, but never say never.

It’s like Leticia and her cousins are having an Italian lunch. But, I want to be out of the country in exactly two hours, yet there’s so many things going on right now, the last thing I should be thinking about is leaving the office let alone my wife.

Real Madrid and Atletico play tomorrow, and I don’t want to watch it on television. Whenever they’re playing football, Lucas and I drop everything to see it live. We always have the best seats in the stadium.

Lucas and I are alone in my office. He stopped by to remind me about the game.

“Now you’re a married man, I didn’t think you would be making such trips,” Lucas teases as he sits opposite me.

“I’m married, not dead, Lucas.” With all the drama going on, I’d forgotten about the game. Lucas is still wearing his scrubs. If anything, he needs this more than I do. He looks exhausted, as if he has turned into Robinson Crusoe. A look which doesn’t suit him at all.

“I didn’t think being married would suit you. Maybe it was being away for a month that did it.” Lucas smiles as he sits opposite me and throws my stress ball in the air.

“Or the one I thought I was marrying tell you that she was playing some sick game. Or your older brother rising from the dead, and showing up,” I growl as I rub my temples.

I’m not one for handling my emotions, mi abuela said that I took after my mom. The one I never met, she said that she was an emotional girl, the one who took everything on board, and unfortunately, it feels as if I’ve taken after her.

“Maybe I need to get out of here.”

“Or maybe, Diego, you should go and talk to your wife. Why are you being so stubborn about this?”

I replayed the whole story to Lucas. He says that it sounds as if Belén is trying to get back at Leticia. Who knows? He wants me to talk to Leticia, whereas I just want to get the fuck out of here.

Just as he says that, Belén knocks on the door and pops her head in. “I’m just letting you know you’re late for your meeting. It started ten minutes ago.”

“I’m not late. I’m not going. I’m heading on a flight to Madrid.”

“You are?” Belén and Lucas ask at the same time.

“Yes, we are, Lucas.”
