She hangs on my every word and nods fiercely.

“That’s my girl,” I coo. “Let’s do this, princess. I’ve got you, my love.”

Odi’s face contorts with pain, her grip on my hand tightening even more. The midwives nod and get in place to do their thing, coaching Odi through the pushing, but I don’t hear them. My focus is on my wife.

I whisper words of encouragement in Odi’s ear, my voice filled with love and determination. The room feels charged with anticipation as the sound of Odi’s laboured breaths fills the air. With each push, her strength and resilience amazes me.

Suddenly, a cry echoes through the room, and tears well up in my eyes as I catch sight of our first daughter, being wrapped snugly in the midwife’s arms. The joy on Odi’s face is immeasurable as she reaches out for our child, her exhaustion momentarily forgotten.

As the midwife tends to our firstborn, I turn my attention back to Odi and press a gentle kiss against her forehead. “You did it, my love,” I murmur, overwhelmed with pride. “You are incredible.”

Odi smiles weakly, her energy draining from the intense effort she had just exerted. The midwife hands her our first born and Odi gazes at her with adoration until a second contraction hits and she cries out in pain. The midwife whisks the baby away to a waiting bassinet and the two women prepare for the second arrival.

“Our second baby...is coming,” Odi whispers, her voice laced with both anticipation and weariness.

I nod reassuringly, gripping her hand tightly. “We’re in this together, princess. Just a little while longer.”

With renewed determination, Odi pushes once more, her strength faltering but never waning. Moments later, our seconddaughter enters the world, filling the room with another cry that blends harmoniously with her sister’s.

Tears prick my eyes as the two midwives place our daughters into my waiting arms. They nestle against me as if they know they’ve arrived in a loving embrace. I gently place a kiss on each of their foreheads, overwhelmed by the miracles before me.

I’m filled with a sense of awe and pure bliss as I hold our two daughters, their tiny bodies pressed against mine. Odi looks at me with a mix of exhaustion and elation, her eyes shining with unshed tears.

In this moment, I make a silent vow to protect them all, just as I promised Odi moments ago. They, along with Rose, are our everything, the light in our lives, and I will do whatever it takes to keep all of them safe and happy.

As I continue to revel in the joy of this precious moment, the sound of footsteps approach the room. Zie enters cautiously. “How are they?” he asks softly, his eyes flicking between me and the twins in my arms.

A smile spreads across my face, reaching my eyes. “They’re perfect,” I reply, my voice filled with pride and love. “And they’re ready to meet their other daddies. Come, meet our daughters.”

Zie’s expression softens as he steps closer to take a look at the newborns. His gaze lingers on their tiny faces, his eyes welling up with emotion. “They’re beautiful,” he says quietly, his voice choked with unspoken words. “I want one.”

Odi huffs an exhausted laugh. “Might need a bit of recovery time for a while, babe.”

Zie laughs quietly. “I meant?—”

“I know,” Odi replies softly. “But nothing would give me more pleasure than giving you a daughter too. In a few years’ time. I can’t handle the thought of having four children before I’m twenty. Not when I have three before I’m nineteen!”

“What makes you so sure we’d have a girl?” Zie muses.

“Just a hunch.” Odi shrugs. “I did my penance with boys growing up with you lot. It’s time I had more amazing women in my life.”

“They’ll learn from the best,” he tells her, carefully leaning over to kiss her.

Kaiden joins us and coos over the new babies who are sleeping peacefully, catching my eye and giving me a subtle nod to say everything is sorted. I relax.

With the arrival of our twins and the knowledge that they are safe, I take a deep breath and exhale a sigh of relief. As I cradle our babies, Odi and I exchange tender glances, basking in the joy and relief of their safe delivery. It’s a moment that we will cherish forever, and I’m touched that Kaiden and Zie both gave us the gift of experiencing it together.

Looking at Zie and Kaiden, I can see the hint of pride and happiness in their eyes. They, too, have become fathers again, standing by us every step of the way. It doesn’t matter what it says on a birth certificate or a DNA test. We’re all fathers to all of our girls. Nothing brings me greater happiness than sharing.

“So what are we calling these little darlings?” Zie asks.

“Iris,” I reply confidently, wanting to name one of our daughters after my mother. Odi smiles and nods; we’d spoken about this before. “And…Poppy?” I ask.

We weren’t certain on a second name to begin with, agreeing that we could test out different options and decide once the twins were here.

“Poppy’s perfect,” Odi sighs. “Let me hold them, please.”

We carefully manoeuvre the twins into Odi’s arms where she gazes at them adoringly.

“I can’t wait for Rose to meet her baby sisters,” Zie murmurs. “She’s been so excited for their arrival.”

“She’s going to be the best big sister in the world,” Kaiden adds.

In this quiet moment, I look at my wife, our children, and our family, and I know that we are truly blessed. We have faced adversity, heartbreak, and challenges, but here we are, stronger and more united than ever. We have built a life filled with love, laughter, and unwavering support. And as I hold our daughters close, I can’t help but feel an overwhelming sense of gratitude for the journey that led us here.

This was never a fucking love story.

It was always destined to be so much more.
