I consider Axel’s gracious fucking offer. Fuck him for thinking I need his permission to sleep with Kaiden! For one night only.I should have shot him twice! At least.

A low, angry growl tumbles out of me and Kaiden huffs in amusement,

“Or not.”

“Sorry.” I tense, unsure what else to say. Does tonight change anything? Yes, of course it does. But does it changeeverything? No, it doesn’t.

Because in the morning I’ll still be The Doe, and there will be expectations to uphold. And if I want to take down The General and his business associates, I’m still going to need the power and connections that come with being part of The Holy Trinity. Of beinghis.

Fuck.

“Don’t sweat it, babygirl. I’m easy.”

“Tell me something I don’t know,” I mutter under my breath. Apparently not low enough though.

“Ouch, you wound me.”

“You’ll get over it.”

“I just meant, no pressure. I’m here for you, no expectations or strings attached. I’ll go with the flow, for however long you need.”

“I can’t think about the future.”

“Then let’s focus on tonight. What do you want?”

“Honestly? Food. Maybe a drink or ten. And a good night’s sleep away from it all.”

“Consider it done. But there will be snuggles.”

I smile at him. Such a macho hard ass. I know for a fact that he still sleeps with his body wrapped around a pillow when he doesn’t have anyone to share his bed with him.

“I could agree to that.”

The rest of the limo ride passes in silence, Kaiden leaving me to my thoughts, but his hand in mine is the grounding presence I need to keep calm and not freak out or spiral.

I can do this. Food. Drink. Snuggle. Sleep. Everything else outside of those four goals is a problem for future me. She’ll kick my ass in the morning for being a damn coward, but I think I deserve one night lying in a bed of denial. Especially wrapped in my only ally’s arms.

When we pull up to our destination, I gape at Kaiden.

“What?” he asks with a wry smile.

“Is this even safe?”

“Safest place for you to be right now if you won’t come home.”

“Don’t call it that. It’s not my home. I don’t have one of those anymore.”

“Come on, babygirl. Let’s meet my friend and get you settled inside.”

Unlike Axel, Kaiden doesn’t wait for the driver to open his door, he swings it wide and climbs out, before turning back to me with his palm outstretched like a prince in a movie. As if I need his help getting out of a car. I just shot someone for Christ’s sake!

I scowl at Kaiden, ignore the proffered hand, and climb out.

“Saint, this is Odile. Odi, this is Saint, president of The Hallowed Saints MC here in Hallows Creek.”

“Nice to meet you,” I murmur, shivering slightly in the cool breeze. Now that the adrenaline has worn off, I’m cold and bone achingly tired. And sad. So indescribably sad.

“Nice to meet you, Doe,” the Pres replies with a mocking tilt of his head.
