How many brides have socked their own groom at their wedding before? It’s so fucking tempting. But would it help or hinder the ruse we’re trying to create here?

I step back from Hector and give them a tight smile.

“If you’ll excuse me, I need to find the bathroom.”

“Odi, wait?—”

I don’t wait for Hector, and Axel doesn’t call me back. I’m not even that upset, I just need a minute.

I leave the ballroom and head for the main foyer. I know there’s probably toilets in the main room, but I know where the other ones are, and it’ll get me out of here for a moment to clear my head.

Hector was working for Axel the entire time. Of course he was. I sigh. I know it makes sense, especially considering I started seeing a lot more of Hector during the week of peace Iwon from the Trinity after the first task. He saved me when I passed out in Trinity’s and, knowing it’s the boys’ bar and that I heard gunshots in the storage rooms that night, it makes even more sense as to why he was there.

I wonder if Axel knows we kissed though.

Probably not. I doubt Hector would still be breathing.

I’m disappointed that I didn’t make a friend for myself, but then I hear Lou’s voice and I’m reminded of the girls. They’ve been amazing friends.

“Stop it,” a low, menacing voice hisses.

“No,” Louise snaps back, making me falter. She sounds so angry. “I said I don’t want to do this here.”

My spine tingles at her words, my heartbeat starting to thump so loud I have to strain to listen to what happens next. I should ask her if she’s okay.

“Louise, please—” The other speaker’s words are a pained groan. “I’m just trying to talk to you.”

I stop myself from running to her rescue. That’s Saint speaking. He’s not hurting her. She’s safe.

I take a deep breath and debate what to do. Obviously he’s caught her coming out of the toilets. I remember from opening night that the ladies’ loos are around the corner and at the end of the corridor. Clearly they think they have some privacy. Do I stay here and stop anyone else from interrupting them, or should I make my presence known and offer Lou the option to come with me. I could use the excuse that I need help with my dress.

“I don’t want to hear it,Saint.”

“I hate it when you call me that.”

“Well, what should I call you then? Cause I have a few choice insults ready to go!”

He sighs. “It’s my name now. But I hate it when you say it like that.”

”Well how should I say it? Because I want to scream and cry and hit you until I run out of energy and tears.”

“Sunshine, don’t?—”

“You donotget to call me that! Ever!” she hisses.

“Sorry. Of course. I accept your boundaries,” he replies, sounding chastised.

“Ha! Do you though? Because I’m pretty sure I’ve told you to leave me alone and stop bothering me, and yet here you are. Cornering me and trapping me at my best friend’s wedding!”

“Odi’s your best friend?” he asks, sounding shocked.

“Yes.”

I smile at how firm and determined she sounds.

“Well, in that case, we’re going to be seeing a lot of each other in the future, Lou. So you’re going to have to talk to me sometime.”

“Maybe you could hold your breath until I do,” she retorts with false sweetness. I have to bite my tongue to keep from giggling.
