I know I’ll fiercely protect my unborn son. Another reason to stay away from my father.
“How are you doing?” Matteo asks me, kissing me from behind after I enter the back office.
I turn to him and kiss him on the lips. “I’m good. You?”
“Good,” he says.
The sun suits him. He’s been learning how to surf and mastering Brazilian martial arts. He’s grown a decent beard since we arrived. I have to admit, he looks even sexier than he did when we first met. He also added a tattoo with my real name to his collection, just above his right leg on his hip. A place only I can see.
“I have a doctor’s appointment next week. Forgot to mention it to you,” I say, pouring myself some tea.
“I’ll be there.”
I sip my chamomile tea and set the mug aside. He sits across from me and turns on his laptop. How are we so lucky? We’ve rebuilt our lives and escaped the world we both dreaded.
“Isn’t it funny?” I ask, pondering.
He raises his gaze from the laptop to me. “What?”
“If you think about it, kidnapping me was the best thing for both of us,” I say, amusement filling my voice.
He stands and cups my face. “Who would have thought that the kidnapping was only the beginning?”
