I roll my eyes and I nod my head in the direction of Emily and Adam. “Adam asked if he could escort Emily last night when I was out to dinner with Julia and I said some stupid stuff so here I am.”

“You’re not getting back together with her, are you?” Lily asks in a tone that lets me know exactly what a bad idea she thinks that is.

“That is definitely not happening. I was going to tell her that last night at dinner when Adam and Emily showed up at my table but when he asked if he could bring Emily, instead of saying ‘no’, I told him ‘no problem’ and that I would take Julia.” I rub my face as Mike laughs at me.

“So I’m taking it you didn’t talk to Emily the night of the auction?” Lily chastises me.

I glance over at Mike and he just shrugs. “Dude, you know I can’t keep anything a secret from her.”

I shake my head and chuckle. Lily is amazing and I really don’t care that she knows. This is just new for me and I’m a bit embarrassed to be handling the entire situation like a teenager.

“I went to her house with every intention of telling her how I feel. When I was heading up to her front porch, Julia was standing there. She threw her arms around me and started telling me that she missed me and Emily pretty much closed the door on us.”

Both Mike and Lily give me a look that leaves no doubt to what an idiot I’m being. Thankfully they don’t say anything.

“Mike! Lily! How good to see you! Mason didn’t tell me you’d be here,” Julia says in that overly sweet voice of hers.

“Hi Julia. So nice to see you. Do you want to walk a bit with me?” I give Lily a grateful look as she ushers Julia away.

“Your wife is magic,” I say to Mike, as Julia and Lily are out of earshot.

“She is, isn’t she?” He smiles and watches her walk away with adoring eyes. He then looks back at me with complete seriousness. “What are you going to do about this mess of a situation you created?”

I glance at Emily and Adam just as she laughs at something he whispers into her ear. My jaw clenches.

“I don’t know, man. I don’t know. I’ve really made a mess of this.” Mike laughs at me.

“That’s putting it mildly.” I glare at him letting him know he’s not any help. “But it’s not unfixable. You just have to permanently end things with one woman and declare your love to another. Nothing you haven’t done before.” He smacks his hand on my back as he laughs hysterically.

“Remind me not to go to you for any pep talks,” I mumble, shaking my head.

“It will be fine, as long as you handle it right,” he says. “Emily is in love with you too. Anyone who sees the two of you together knows it. This will work,” he genuinely says.

I take a deep breath and sigh. “Thanks, man.”

“Looks like now’s your chance,” He nods his head toward Emily. I turn to see her heading out to the patio. “Go get her.”

“Thanks,” I say as I start walking in her direction. For the first time today my heart feels light and I’m ready to tell her how I feel. I can’t stand seeing her with Adam anymore and I want her by my side.

“Emily,” I call to her as I step outside. “What are you doing out here without a coat! It’s freezing.”

I walk up to her and wrap my jacket around her shoulders. My hand brushes against her skin and I feel the electricity shoot throughout my body. She is staring at me with those big blue eyes and I feel myself getting lost in them.

I want to kiss her so bad but I become aware we aren’t alone. I put a little bit of distance between us.

“I just came out for some fresh air. It was a bit stuffy for me inside.”

I put my hands on the railing, and admire the blue of the sky while I try to think of what to say. My heart is racing and my thoughts are all over the place.

“I hate seeing you with Adam.” Not exactly what I was going for. “Let me rephrase that. I want you to be happy but not with him.”

“That was rephrasing, Mason?” she asks incredulously. “Are you being serious right now? You’re here with Julia, after she shows up onmyporch and the first thing you have to say to me is this?”

God, she’s beautiful. Even when she’s annoyed with me. My heart is beating so hard it’s all I hear. I can’t help but wonder if she can hear it too.

She looks away from me and I can start to feel the chill seep in, whether from the cold or the fear of what I’m about to say I can’t tell. Why is this so hard?

Come on Mason, let’s go. This is your moment, don’t squander it.
