“Yeah.’

“I’ll send you the details once I have them.”

Zep ended the call. Technology sure made some things a hell of a lot easier.

Zep phonedMick as he walked from the carpark to the hospital entrance.

“Zep.” Mick answered immediately. “What have you come as?”

“Just a regular Joe looking to break the face of the next prick who comments on my appearance.” He glanced around. “Where you at?”

“At your six. You won’t find me.” Mick had an ability to blend into any space.

“Any visitors?”

“Nah.”

“You got eyes on any other entrances?”

“Jacko got me access to the hospital’s security cameras. Got all the entrances right here on my phone.”

“Good. Let me know if Abby arrives, or anyone else.”

“Will do.”

Zep slipped the phone into his back pocket as the automatic doors of the main entrance slid open. The smell of antiseptic greeted him as he paused to get his bearings. The reception desk was encased in Perspex and timber veneer, while signs pointed the way to various departments. Hospital staff, patients and visitors moved steadily in all directions. Further down the hall was a gift shop and café. Zep headed in that direction, keeping watch for signs to the general ward.

Two grey-haired women wearing bright yellow aprons with royal blue trim and the word “Volunteer” embroidered on them sat on plastic chairs behind a table filled with pamphlets and knitted teddy bears.

“Excuse me, ladies.” He pasted a smile on his face he hoped looked congenial and not menacing.

“Oh, hello there.” The plastic tag pinned to her apron said her name was Doreen. “How can we help you?”

“I’m looking for the general ward.”

“You’re going in the right direction.” Doreen stood and pointed a bony finger. “Down this corridor and to your right.”

“Thanks so much. You have a nice day, ladies.”

Heat crept under his collar. He’d had twelve hours of driving time to think about what he was going to say to Rachel, but he was still drawing a blank.

Jacko had sent him Rachel’s bed number, so he had no need to talk with anyone official. When he found the room, the space where her bed should have been was empty. His shoulders sagged with relief, then he straightened.Where the hell was she?

"They've taken her for some tests. Probably be gone a few hours.”

Zep turned towards the voice. An older man with thinning hair sat in the bed opposite. He had a newspaper spread across his lap, the racing guide in his hand.

Damn.“I guess I’ll come back later.”

“Visiting hours are ten until eight at night.” The man’s eyes were back on the racing guide.

“Thanks.”

He had a fair idea how he’d pass the time. Zep stepped out into the corridor and looked up and down. A nurse pushed a patient in a wheelchair in the opposite direction. Voices murmured in the room across from him. His phone vibrated with a message from Jacko.

Observation Unit, stable.

Zep ambled down the corridor, glancing in each room. The nurses station sat opposite another room, the sign above it read Close Observation Unit.Bingo.
