She glanced at Tom, who avoided her eyes. Clearly, he hadn’t told her everything.

‘You need to trust me.’

‘I do trust you, but we need a new plan. We can’t keep fighting in the dark.’ She didn’t give him a chance to respond. ‘And let’s talk about trust. I have never lied to you. Not about who I am or how I feel. You have no reason not to trust me. So how about you give me this.’ She gestured at Tom. ‘Hear him out.’

‘I do trust you, Sarah. But I don’t trust him.’

‘Come on mate, you should listen to her.’ Tom stepped back into the conversation.

‘This doesn’t involve you.’

‘I can give you the heads up when the sharks are circling.’

Alex turned his attention to the detective. ‘Really? Is that before or after they put a bullet in me?’

She shuddered at the thought. ‘There has to be a way we can make this work?’

‘There’s no way we come out of this alive if I dog on The Devils. I’ve told you this before.’

But you’ve never been presented with an opportunity like this before!‘Can you just listen to his plan?’

They held each other’s gaze, both convinced the other was wrong.

The detective pursed his lips. ‘Well Hollywood, your girlfriend agrees with me.’

Her nails dug into her palms, teeth grinding in agitation. ‘You know what, Tom? Refer to me as his girlfriend rather than by my name one more time, and I’ll shoot you myself.’

Alex chuckled. The glare she shot back was heavy with fury.

‘Enough! Both of you.’ She had to move this on. ‘Tom, you have five minutes to lay out your plan. Alex, all you have to do is listen.’

Nable laidout the basics of his plan. What the police had and what they needed. How they intended to dismantle The Devils and lock them up. If Alex could give them enough to put things in motion, he would be able to get him and Sarah unprecedented protection. Both here and in Australia.

Alex stared out the window as the detective spoke. He made no comment but the muscle in his jaw worked overtime. Sarah knew it was costing him a lot to listen to a police officer.

‘I can’t guarantee you won’t serve time but if we can pull this off, I know my boss will make the case to the DPP for you.’

His silence was unreadable.

Sarah moved closer to Alex. ‘That’shisplan. There’s no reason we can’t make our own recommendations. Make our own conditions.’

She wanted to touch him, make him look at her. The truth was, she was afraid of what she’d find. He’d listened, which was all she’d asked of him. She knew she couldn’t make him agree.

‘This isn’t about the police or The Devils, Alex. I don’t want to keep running, never knowing who is hiding in the shadows. I don’t think you do either.’

The muscle in his jaw stopped moving but the tension remained.

‘We don’t have to go home,’ she whispered. ‘What if we could stay. Find some little village, settle down. Maybe,’ she paused, swallowing hard to keep the tremor from her voice. ‘Maybe we could start our own family one day?’

Now he looked at her. His face was stone, but his eyes…deep blue pools with something that looked a lot like hope glimmering in the recesses. She could see him again.

‘John did it. He and Alison left on their terms and made a new life for themselves.’ This time she did reach for him. ‘They did it together, as a team.’

He gave the slightest nod and the relief flooded her. She hadn’t lost him. There was still hope they could get through this. They needed to talk about it, but not here. Not with Tom Nable bearing witness. Knowing they still wanted to be with each other was one thing, but Alex was yet to agree to help Tom in any way.

‘If you hadn’t helped John when he asked, he wouldn’t have been able to leave. You took a leap of faith with him. Can’t you do that now? With Tom?’

‘I don’t know… ’ His gaze returned to the window.
