‘I heard about this guy who could help me set up in Europe. Get me anything I need, help me move money around.’

‘Through your brother?’

‘Nah man, Brian couldn’t give a fuck about anyone but himself.’

Alex nodded. Brian Isobel hadn’t spoken up for Jizzy, for all intents and purposes signing his younger brother’s death warrant.

‘I’ve been putting this together for a couple of months. Just needed to find a way to disappear. That’s where you come into it.’

Alex narrowed his eyes.

‘I knew if I held out on Zep long enough, he’d think I was playing him. He’d send you for sure. When I heard on the grapevine you had yourself a honeypot - sorry, girlfriend - I thought if I could just talk to you, maybe… ’

‘What made you think I’d give a fuck about you?’

‘Alex, you don’t care about anyone or anything. Then suddenly you’re spending time with this chick, disappearing for days with her. You act like you’ve got something to hide. Certain parties got curious.’

His stomach dropped. How did I miss this?‘Who else knows?’

‘Fuck man, everyone knows.’

Something took root inside of him. The sensation was foreign but somehow familiar. It took over his central nervous system, messing with all of his circuits. He couldn't think straight. Something hot and acidic rushed through his veins. His knees threatened to give out from under him. He remembered. This is how he’d felt almost every day when he was a small child. Four, five, six years old.

Fear. It was undiluted fear.

He might actually throw up. He tried to get oxygen to flow into his lungs again but the rush of air made him light headed. He had to focus. Think!

‘Please Alex, I’m begging you.’

Jizzy’s words brought him back to the present.

‘I’ve got money, I can pay you.’

Alex’s brain started to work again. ‘I don’t want your money.’

Everybody knows?

His mind raced, trying to catch up. In the distance he could hear the muffled crunch and smash of a skip bin being emptied. Time was almost up.

‘Your contact.’

‘What about him?’

‘I want the name.’

‘Why?’

‘Insurance.’

Jizzy took a step towards him. ‘He won’t take kindly to being bothered for no reason.’

‘He won’t be.’

With a quick shake of his head, Jizzy gave him the information.

Alex started folding the tarp into a rough cocoon shape, at first glance it might look like a body was wrapped in it. He hefted it into the skip and then pulled the lid over closed. Jizzy started to help him push the bin to the roller door.

‘Stay out of sight,’ barked Alex.
