“I will, but you know I did nothing wrong, right?” If she was listening in she’ll know that for sure. I wasn’t as rude as I could have been and probably should have been. I also stuck around to be insulted.

“You know what I mean, Autumn.”

My shoulders slump and I nod. “Yes, okay, fine.” It’s that thing about playing the game again to get what I want. For my freedom and two million dollars, I’ll do it.

“Your father will be home in half an hour. He wants to talk to us about the team’s upcoming schedule. He wants us to be at the remaining games for the season and the playoffs, should the team make it. Which I’m sure they will.”

Good, that means I’ll get to see Luc even more.

“I think so, too. Haven’t they made the playoffs every year for the last couple of years and won the Cup, too?”

“They have, but you know your father. He doesn’t want to get ahead of himself just in case things don’t work out. He also doesn’t want to be the first owner of the team to have things go south.” She sighs. “The curse of being the new guy.”

As controlling as my father has been with me, I want him to do well. I know what owning this team means for him. I also know what victory means for Luc.

What I don’t like is Dad basically pitting Evan against Luc for the captain’s position.

“They’re the Hawks. I’m sure they’ll come through.”

“I think so. Anyway, Charlotte and Cole will be joining us for dinner. Will you be okay with that?”

“Of course.”

That’s the first time I’ve said those words or anything similar and really meant it. That’s because of Luc.

Last night I went from feeling like someone had poured acid into my wounds to being a real goddess.

Luc came along and swept me off my feet, taking me out of this world. By the time the sun came up, I struggled to remember what made me feel so bad in the first place.

“I’m really glad you’re doing so well with them.” Mom gives me a heartfelt smile. “You’ve shown great strength.”

Because I’ve had to be strong. “You don’t have to worry about me when it comes to them. Like I said before, I’ve moved on.”

I’ve moved on to better things. Luc might only be mine for the next few months, but the man is a literal god. There is no comparison between him and Cole. Absolutely none.

“That makes me feel so much better. I’ve been worried about you.”

Although I can honestly say that I know she has worried about me, Mom was the pacifier again when it came to Charlotte and Cole. She was the neutral person trying to keep the peace so I’ve been alone in trying to find that strength she’s talking about.

“Nothing to worry about.”

“Good. Well, you’ll be happy to hear that Zoe should be back at work tomorrow.”

I’ve known that since this morning. Zoe is the only person I’ll be telling about Luc. There’s no way I can keep this secret from her. Besides, I know she’ll support me, and I might never know when I need her to cover for me.

“It will be great to have her back.”

“Yes. I’ll need you girls to wrap up anything that’s outstanding and prepare to travel. Also, your magazine will go into edits next week.” Mom smiles and reaches out to touch my hands. “I read it earlier and I think it was outstanding.”

The compliment warms my heart. “Really, Mom?”

“Yes.”

“Thanks, I did my best.” I was able to finish my interviews with the players last week, so I wrote the article. However, having Luc’s interview included felt like the cherry on top of the cake. After our make our session at the manor I was able to get my exclusive on him, which I knew people were going to love.

“I think you did more than that.” Mom releases my hands and clasps hers. “I was so thrilled that you were able to get an interview with Luc Le Blanche.”

Hearing Luc’s name sends a shiver of arousal down my spine. “I really did do my best.” I hope like hell I don’t have that dreamy look I always get when anyone mentions Luc’s name.
