When Preston made us aware about the marriage clause he gave Hunter the chance to pick his own wife, but Asher was promised to marry the daughter of an old family friend. They haven’t seen each other in years, but they knew each other as kids. They didn’t get along then. I doubt they’ll get along now.

“Well, misery loves company.” I raise my glass as if to toast and finish the rum in one gulp. I pour some more, loving the numbness it gives my mind.

“What’s going on with you?” He hits me with an incredulous glare. “You were on fire last week. Last night alone was epic.”

“Thank you.” I try to smile, but it falters. “I’ve fucked my mind over with this girl.”

“You mean Jakobe’s daughter?” He gives me a wide-eyed glare. “You’re seriously still thinking about her?”

“Yes.”

Hunter smiles for the first time since he arrived and pours himself another glass of rum. “What happened with her?”

“Looks like she’s dating Evan. Jakobe set them up.”

“Fuck. Are you serious?”

“Yeah.”

“And are you going to let that asshole take your girl?” He raises his dark brows. “I knew you still wanted her.”

“You know it’s not that simple.”

He leans in and rests his elbows on the counter. “You’re Luc Le Blanche, make it that simple. Her asshole father set her up with that loser, but she was with you first. You saw her first. Sure, if the connection’s gone, forget it, but if it’s still there then what Jakobe doesn’t know won’t hurt his ass.” The smile he gives me is murderous.

Maybe it’s the rum but when I contemplate his idea it doesn’t sound as bad as it did when I first thought about it.

I’ve considered it several times—seeing Autumn behind her father’s back.

Back then I thought better of it, but since then I know from the way my Venus looks at me that the connection hasn’t gone anywhere. She looks at me like she still wants me.

I never stopped wanting her.

“Maybe you need to fuck her out of your system.” Hunter’s off-balance laugh suggests he’s on the verge of drunkenness.

While he grabs the bottle of rum and starts drinking straight from it, I give more thought to this forbidden plan brewing in my mind.

Imagining Autumn with Evan is driving me absolutely fucking crazy.

As risky as it is, I don’t think I could live with myself if I didnothing.

So Hunter is right. Am I seriously going to allow Evan to take my girl?

No.

I’m not.

Chapter 16

Autumn

Patience, Autumn. Patience.

You only have to endure one more hour with this asshole. Just wait it out.

I’ve been giving myself the same pep talk for the last two hours.

Now I only have one more hour left to this horrid date with Evan.
