I close the door, walk over and sit. As I do, I feel like this could be the scene from months ago when we met to discuss how we were going to move forward.

I don’t know what Jakobe is playing at by inviting us both here. And I don’t know how I’m supposed to sit inches away from Evan without snapping his neck.

"Thank you both for coming at such short notice," Jakobe starts.

"No problem," Evan says with confidence.

I say nothing.

Jakobe looks at me. "Luc, thank you for bringing certain things to my attention. I have since discovered more.”

Instantly, my interest piques. "More?"

"So much more," he replies, switching his gaze to Evan, who now looks confused.

"What's going on here?" Evan asks. "I thought Luc was getting kicked off the team. I know it was him who attacked me. And look what happened the other day with Autumn.”

Jakobe sits forward and rests his hands on the desk. "On the contrary, Evan. It's you who's being kicked off the team."

On hearing those words, a sense of justice fills me.

Evan sits straighter as if a steel rod has been shoved up his spine. "Excuse me? What the hell is happening here?"

Jakobe picks up the evidence envelope I gave him and slides it over to Evan. "This is evidence against you to show you’ve been planning to throw our games all season."

Evan's skin pales. "What? No, that's not true. This is all a lie."

"Pictures don't lie. And that's not the only thing."

"What else is there?"

"We found a ton of drugs in your locker this morning. The police have also raided your apartment, where they found more."

This shocks me, but I'm not surprised. The other day when I saw Evan, he looked as if he was on drugs, and we know he's been dealing.

Evan jumps out of his chair and stands with raised fist. "You can't do this to me."

"Watch me," Jakobe replies.

Evan lunges forward to hit Jakobe, but I stop him by body-checking him into the wall. We're like two giants crashing together, but I'm stronger, so Evan slams into the wall then falls onto the ground.

Seeing the opportunity to teach him another lesson, I grab him up by his neck and land a fist in his face, stunning him.

“Motherfucker. Yeah, it was me you beat your ass the other night. Don’t you ever touchmy girlagain.” I shove him back onto the ground.

Before he can recover, the door flies open and two police officers walk in. They march up to Evan and grab his arms, hoisting him up from the floor.

When he realizes he's vastly outnumbered, the fight leaves him and he says no more.

Jakobe stands and points at him. "You asshole. I trusted you but you took advantage. Now you will be disqualified from playing onanyteam in the NHL, and rest assured, my daughter and I will be pressing charges against you for the attempted rape. Officers, get him out of here."

The police read him his rights and take him away. As I watch him go, the world feels right again, as if reality has reset itself and things are back to the way they used to be. Except certain things have changed.

I look back at Jakobe and find him already staring at me, but he's looking at me with the same respect I saw in his eyes yesterday.

"Thank you for stepping in," he says. “But you know I could have taken him, right?"

The ghost of a smile appears on his face. It might be the most civilized he’s been with me since he took over the team.
