"Yes, better for seeing you." I'm glad there's no one else in the office so we can talk like this.

He walks up to the desk and touches my arm. "I needed to talk to you about something." A shadow of seriousness touches his face.

"What's going on?"

"It’s something to do with Evan. I thought it was best I came in and saw you, also to check on you."

"That sounds serious, Luc. What's happening?"

"It's nothing to worry about yet. I saw Evan doing something that looked suspicious. I'm looking into it."

"What did you see?"

"I don’t want you to worry about that, especially since I’m not sure of what I saw yet. Just promise me you’ll be careful around him and try not to go on any more dates or anything where you’re alone with him.”

My stomach squeezes and I give him a wide-eyed stare. “Luc, that might mess things up for us. If I stop acting like I’m dating him that’s going to cause all sorts of problems, and my father will have something to say about it.”

Luc sighs with frustration. “Keep the pretense up then. Just don’t go anywhere with him for the next few days. Not until I know what he’s up to. But seriously, I think we’ve gotten to thestage where we need to find another way that doesn’t involve Evan. He’s going to expect more from you. I’m sure he already does. We’ve been playing this game with him for weeks.”

Luc is right. I knew we’d get to this stage. I just wanted to prolong it for as long as possible.

"What will we do?"

“We have the manor for now. We’ll have to work around that. I don't want you to worry about it, though. Okay?”

“Okay.”

He touches my cheek and I smile. I am worried, though, because I know what my father is like. Going to the manor was a great excuse to be away, but that was because of Evan. As long as my father thought I was with him there were no problems. Now there probably will be.

“I promise I’ll think of something. Right now I just want to make sure you’re safe."

"I trust you."

Footsteps at the door interrupt the moment. We both look around to find Evan standing there.

Luc removes his hand from my cheek.

I wasn't expecting Evan either, but I heard he was going to be in the building to see my mom for some upcoming publicity shoot.

From the look he's giving Luc, I’m guessing he might have seen him come in here and wanted to check what he was doing with me.

"I hope I'm not interrupting anything." Evan glares at Luc.

"No," I say quickly.

"I was just checking something out," Luc explains.

Evan glances at me. "I've come to take Autumn to lunch."

Shit.Just when Luc warns me away from Evan, the devil comes with an offer of lunch.

“I wanted to spend my lunch hour going over my article,” I say, hoping he’ll accept that.

“You work too hard, Autumn.” Evan smirks. “Your father specifically sent me to take you to lunch.”

Damn it, Dad.

I glance at Luc, then back at Evan. If Dad has practically ordered him here I’m going to have to go with him to keep the peace.
