Krexar, now enraged, roared in frustration.

His attention was still fixed on Riley.

He lunged once more, and this time his hand closed around her arm.

I tried to shout, to fight, but my body refused to obey.

Darkness edged my vision, but I fought to stay conscious, to bear witness.

I watched, heart pounding, as Krexar attempted to drag Riley away.

Riley lashed an arm around an exposed tree root, interlocking her hands and arms.

No matter how hard Krexar pulled, he couldn’t release her from it.

I supposed his goal was to drag both herandme behind him.

But he had also underestimated the monster’s speed.

With a swift, fluid motion that belied its massive size, it closed the gap between them.

The creature’s many eyes focused on Krexar, not Riley, as if it recognized who the true threat was.

But Krexar had one final move to play.

With a cruel, desperate strength, he shoved Riley toward me, trying to put her directly in the path of the creature.

His hope was clear: that the beast would take her and me, giving him an opportunity to flee.

Riley, as if sensing his intention, changed her own tactics.

With a grace and swiftness that left me in awe, she let go of the roots, lunged forward, and wrapped her arms and legs around Krexar’s lower limbs.

“Riley!” I gasped, trying to comprehend her actions.

She was putting herself directly in harm’s way, right in the monster’s path.

Krexar roared in frustration, trying to shake her off.

He reached down, grabbing at her hair, her arms, trying to pry her away.

But Riley’s grip was relentless, her arms like iron shackles around him.

Each time Krexar tried to step forward, he found himself anchored by the woman clinging to his legs.

“Let go, you foolish girl!” Krexar spat, his voice filled with fury and desperation.

Riley didn’t respond with words.

Instead, she tightened her grip, locking her fingers and squeezing her legs even tighter around his, making him stagger.

Krexar’s struggles became more frantic.

He toppled over, trying to roll and dislodge Riley, but she clung on with a determination I’d never seen before.

He tried to kick her, tried to twist and turn, but every move only seemed to make her grip stronger.

I could hear the beast getting closer.
