She fished her phone from her hoodie pocket. “I’m sure Aaron already contacted them, but we should talk to the agents as well, to alert them to be extra cautious. Matias is around and unstable.”

As she talked to the one assigned to watch her parents and the kids and Ben contacted the one responsible for Izzie, I tried to call the man who was supposed to protect Lisa when I wasn’t around.

When he didn’t answer, I redialed, trying my best not to freak out that he wasn’t picking up the phone. I was about to call a third time when Lisa’s beautiful face appeared on my screen, indicating her call.

“Hey, Lissie. Where are you?”

“She’s going to such a better place.” My chest constricted at the sound of his voice, and I had to lean against the table to steady myself. “Don’t you worry, though. We’re going to have so much fun.”

I heard her whimpering in the back, and something inside me snapped.

“You must be really stupid if you think you’re getting away with this.”

At the sound of my lethal voice, Mia and Ben stopped what they were doing and stared at me with worry.

“Ah, but I’m already getting away. Such a shame. I’d love to see you watch my rise as this beautiful woman falls.”

“If you so much as pull a strand of hair from her head, there won’t be a hellhole in this world where you can hide from me, Matias. And no daddy or boss will keep me from killing you, cabrón de mierda,” I promised through gritted teeth.

He laughed deviously. “I’m afraid you’re already too late. I’m taking what’s mine. Well, and what’s yours.” He chuckled, making my skin crawl. “You thought you could end our legacy. But I’m starting a new one. A better one. Where you thought it was finished, I’m building again. It’s already in motion.”

I heard Lisa’s cries increase, followed by a loudthump. “I think that can keep her whining at a minimum.”

“Hijo de puta!”

“I’m going to miss our play of catch, Delgado. I’ll make sure to remember you while I enjoy your woman.”

With that, he ended the call, leaving Mia and Ben to control the roaring bear I became.

I would take my woman back, no matter the cost.

CHAPTER THIRTY-THREE

My head was killing me. It was hard to understand what was happening and recollect my abduction. The incessant throbbing was making me want to puke. Or maybe it was the jolt of the car, making me hit my already sore scalp. Whatever it was, it was upsetting my stomach.

When bits and pieces of the last—minutes? Hours?—started to come back, I tried to open my eyes, only to squeeze my lids shut when the brightness assaulted my pupils.

It took me a while to acclimatize and remember what had really happened.

The agent assigned to protect me, telling me Sofia was in danger. Him urging me to Danny’s house to help, swearing he would find Fee and protect her as well until he brought her to me. The guy meeting up with Matias instead, demanding his pay right before Matias shot him in the head in front of me.

Matias punching me in the face, tying me down, and throwing me in the back of his truck as he called Danny to threaten me.

Me crying through my gag as I heard him celebrate his devious plans to Danny, right before he hit me with the butt of his gun. The next thing I knew, I was waking up in the back of his truck, being taken to wherever.

My breath caught up in my throat as the terrifying memories assaulted me, making me wonder if that was the end for me. I tried to stay immobile, pretending still to be unconscious, at least so I could get a sense of where we were.

Getting out of that one alive was nothing short of a miracle. But I had too much to live for. I couldn’t accept that I’d met the man I was supposed to love and the girl who was mine in every sense of the way but genetically, only to be taken from this world before we got to live everything we deserved.

I had to fight for my life not only for me. I was fighting for them.

The car came to a stop in what seemed to be a wild area. The space was surrounded by Douglas-fir, all of them heavy with snow. The slam of the driver’s door made my heart speed up. Matias threw the trunk open, and the ominous gust of wind assaulted me.

“Wakey, wakey. It’s time to have some fun.” Ignoring my pretend unconsciousness, he pulled me by the feet closer to him. “I know you’re awake,Formosa. You don’t want to make things harder for you, do you?” He forcefully pulled the gag from my mouth. “We’re not going to need this anymore. There’s no one around to hear you scream.”

I shivered more at his words than at the unforgiving weather. The evilness inside his eyes sent a chill up my spine, and my hopes of getting out of that nightmare alive started to dwindle.

He fisted my hair to pull me out of the car, and I couldn’t help the yelp that escaped my mouth. As I tried to balance myself outside of the trunk, I gazed around to get a better understanding of the area.
