I felt him pulse inside me, but I couldn’t care less about the mess we were making. I was worn out, I was energized. I was enthralled that it was much better than I expected.

I’d just had sex with Danny Delgado. And I couldn’t wait to do it again.

CHAPTER FIFTEEN

Could people notice? I was sure they knew what I did the dawn before. I could also bet my house that they saw it’d rocked my world.

Maybe somewhere, deep in my responsible conscience, I should feel guilty. I was dragging a woman twelve years my junior, with her whole life ahead, right into my mess. But instead of feeling at fault, I felt...happy.

I couldn’t even remember a moment when I felt that complete and right. My baby was my whole world, nothing would take my attention off Sofia. But being with Lisa made that same incredible world even better.

It could be the orgasm talking. But I knew it was more than that.

After we cleaned the mess we made in the kitchen, I carried her to my bedroom for another round until Fee woke up.

Rosie and Jackson insisted that I bring her to them so they could have a day of fun with Teddy, Gabe, and Hugo. My baby was being spoiled left and right. And I couldn’t be more grateful.

So, I headed to By Any Beans to fuel myself, then I’d go to work with Mia and Ben. If I thought the whole time about Lisa, I wouldn’t admit it. Or maybe I would.

I walked into the coffee shop, welcoming the warm smell of pastries and caffeine. April was the first one to spot me, smiling at me with even more enthusiasm. I didn’t know if she knew about my latest adventure or just that Lisa and I were heading to it. For some odd reason, it made me happy that Lisa’s colorful best friend approved.

“Morning, April.”

“Mr. Delgado!” She traipsed to me and clasped her hands in front of her. “Thank you so much for letting me spend the day at your place yesterday.”

“Don’t worry about it. From what I heard, you three had a lot of fun. And please, call me Danny.”

She nodded with enthusiasm, her pink bangs bouncing. “It was awesome. I hope you don’t mind that we fake-dyed Fee’s hair.”

I waved my hand, indicating she didn’t need to worry. “She was entranced by it and wouldn’t stop talking about all the spa treatments she received. According to her, I have a lot to learn.”

She giggled and took my order, while I sought Izzie. I found her at the end of the counter, staring at the booth in the corner, with worry clear in her eyes. I approached her and followed her line of sight, finding Mia and Ben deep in conversation. For the first time in a long time, it seemed to be going well.

I greeted Izzie and kissed her cheek, right before she whispered, “I was so worried. I was wondering if they’d ever come back to what they were.”

It was sweet watching the change in their dynamic. Izzie went from feeling threatened by Mia’s presence to worrying that her friendship with Ben would never be recovered.

“They needed time to find their balance again. Zach was always the one to steady them both.” I always felt a pang in my chest whenever I talked about one of the best men I knew.

“Do you think we’ll ever get over it? Do you think Haley and Gabe can?” Her eyes were filled with unshed tears.

“I honestly don’t know. I can only hope so.”

She turned to me with worried eyes and leaned her head, indicating Mia and Ben. “What happened to them last night?”

I leaned my hips on the counter. “It’s a long story.”

“What’s the short version?”

I pondered my words. “Things got hectic, and Ben was a jerk.” Her shoulders sagged, and I felt like an ass. “He wasn’t being a jerk for the sake of it. He was worried.”

“He can be impulsive, but he loves deeply. We’ve already lost so much, I can’t imagine him losing that friendship, too.” I’d yet to know another person that generous. “Are they ever getting back to what they were?”

I peered at them again, and Ben motioned his head to the side to call me. “Time will tell. But we’ve all been through a lot together to just part ways. We need to have faith.” I squeezed her shoulder and walked to their booth. Since they were seated side by side, I sat down across from them. Despite herbest efforts to cover it, I could see the shadow of the shiner Matias gave her. And my yearning to kill him grew. I was portraying a similar shiner—that Lisa tried to conceal—but Mia shouldn’t be hurt.

“How are you both doing since yesterday?”

“I started groveling. We’re getting there,” Ben answered before he looked at Mia in confirmation. “Right?”
