“I do know. You danced with him to your wedding song?”

Heat rushed to her face. “I was in fourth grade, Denise.”

“Still.”

She had called the radio station and taped the song with her boombox. She had worn out the cassette dancing in her bedroom and thinking of the boy who’d dance with her one day. And none of that had crossed her mind when she’d played “Truly Madly Deeply” for Nick Freeman.

“I didn’t think about it,” she said weakly.

“I’m sure you didn’t.” Denise paused. “But I’m going to be obnoxious now.”

“I’ll pretend you weren’t before.”

“Did you like the kiss?”

His hand had gone from her shoulder to the back of her neck in an instant; there was the sweet shock of being pulled toward him. His lips found hers and she lost herself as everything went warm and tingly. She’d tightened her grip on him as he leaned in. Then, as he fell away from her, she’d tried very hard not to kiss him again.

“He’s good at it,” Hayley said.

Denise let out a breath. “Hey, maybe I could come visit.”

“We’ll probably move back before you get a chance.”

“You’re going to let Kevin make that choice?”

She started pacing. “What do I have here, D? Not a stage. Not Nick. And if I stay, I won’t have Kevin either.”

“Honey, Cyd isn’t taking Kevin’s calls. At least you have jobs in Columbus.”

Hayley frowned as a door slammed downstairs. “Hey, I’ve got to go. I think Kevin’s home.”

“Sure. Love you.”

“Love you too.”

Kevin was on his way up the steps. “What’s going on?” she said.

“Packing a bag,” he said. “I’m going to talk to Cyd.”

“Did she call?”

He pulled a duffel bag down from the closet and threw it on their bed. “She can’t ignore me in person.”

“Don’t you have shows tonight?”

“Told them I was sick.”

Her eyes narrowed. “That’s obviously not true.”

“They’ll live with it.”

She watched him yank clothes from the dresser, fueled by anger and panic.

“Kevin, stop,” she said. “It’s not worth going back.”

“Yeah?” he said over his shoulder. “Even if it fixes us?”

She suddenly felt cold. “What do you mean?”
