“Dance with me?” It’s a question, but his demeanor is all confidence.

He wants to dance with me? After all of that? “Okay. Let me clean myself up, and I’ll be right back.”

Before he can protest, I spin around and run for the restroom.

My hands are soaking wet and sticky from the juice, so I can’t even imagine how he must be feeling. Naomi’s disappeared, so at least she didn’t witness my epic failure at an attempt to flirt, unlike Kellan, who I swear I canstillhear laughing.

After using the washroom and tipping the attendant, I search for my friends. They’ve shifted so they’re closer to the dance floor, and Faye has joined them. Great. Kellan’s going to tell Faye about the scene I made, and she’s going tolovepoking fun at me about it for the rest of the night. It’s only when I’ve gotten closer that I freeze. Something’s different about this scene.

Faye and Dean are separate from the group, and she’s standing closer to him than she normally would. Maybe she can’t hear him over the music?

No. She’s biting her lip and nodding along to something he’s saying, looking up at him through her lashes. She throws her head back and laughs, and it’s like I can see her lips move and say,That’s so funny! Then she shoves his shoulder playfully.

Oh. My. Goodness.

The room spins as I process what I’m seeing. That’s what she told me to do when I asked her how to flirt. She’s pulling her moves onDean. She’sflirtingwith Dean, only a few hours after I told her I had a crush on him. The music is drowned out by the rushing in my ears, and I put a hand on the wall to steady myself. Faye’s my best friend. Why would she do this? She can get anyone she wants, and she chooses the one person she knew would affect me.

She steps even closer to him and now I’ve seen enough. I can’t stay here—Iwon’tstay here and watch this. Tearing my eyes away from the scene in front of me, I run for the exit. The air is suddenly too thick to breathe, and I need to get out before the spinning of the room gets worse.

As soon as I’m out of the club and into the fresh air, I can breathe more easily, but there’s no way I can go back in, so I keep walking.

Alessio’s outside with Priyasha and some other people having a cigar, and I pause for a second. “I’m going back to the resort.

Let everyone know if they’re looking for me.”

“Want us to come with you?” Alessio asks, but I shake my head quickly. I want to be alone, and I don’t want to cut his fun short.

“No. See you tomorrow,” I say through the thickness in my throat.

I continue my journey past the club and around the corner until the music fades into the distance, and only then does the knot in my stomach release the tiniest bit.

Faye can talk to whoever she wants, and so can Dean—I don’t own them. But Fayeknowshow I feel about Dean and she’s still flirting with him. She’s—she’s selfish! She’s supposed to be my best friend, and I always thought she’s had my back.

Apparently, I don’t know anything, but one thing’s for certain, I’m not vacating the room for her to have fun with Dean tonight.

I want a shower and my pillow and I’m not leaving my bed for anyone.

The bitter laugh escapes before I can stop it as I stomp toward the resort. She told me she’d find another guy to take her mind off Kellan, and it looks like she did.

I’m almost at the security gates of the resort when a large hand takes me by surprise and wraps around my bicep, yanking me to a stop.

“Ahh!” I shriek, spinning around and striking out quickly into the guy’s throat, just like Sensei Dan taught during that one week of self-defense in gym class.

“Grurg—” The guy makes a noise and gasps for breath.

He releases me and grabs his neck, bending over a bit, but his light hair catches my attention just before I sprint away.

“Adam?”The adrenaline coursing through me still hasn’t worn off as my heart pumps erratically. “What the heck are you doing sneaking up on me like that? You almost gave me a heart attack!”

He peers up at me and straightens, still rubbing his neck. He clears his throat, but his voice comes out a little raspy. “Sneaking up on you? I’ve been calling your name for the last two blocks.”

He clears his throat again. “Fuck, I think you knocked my Adam’s apple into my stomach.”

“I’m so sorry!” I’m glad it’s dark so he can’t see how embarrassed I am. “Reflexes.”

“Your reflex is going right for the jugular?”

I shrug. “I guess.”
