My gaze then shifts to M’ijel’s pod. Along the broad rim at the top, a soft, golden light emanates, creating a small oasis of calm amidst the turmoil. He no longer resembles his natural appearance and instead looks like the furry monster from before. Still, I would recognize him anywhere.

Despite his transformation, his presence is reassuring, almost comforting. I notice his smile, gentle and warm, and his black eyes, still kind and understanding. The fear I once felt towards his beastly form has faded, replaced by a sense of deep connection.

We mirror each other’s movements, our hands touching the glass of our respective pods. It’s a moment of silent communion, a shared understanding that transcends the physical barrier between us. In this gesture, I find a surprising sense of peace.

“Three…”

As the countdown reaches its zenith, an odd thing happens. Each of the pods subtly shift, aiming at a different spot on the platform below. No doubt it’s due to the Save Point we activated. It’s the first time I realize that the Save Point affects not only M’ijel and me, but all the other creatures too.

The launch is swift, propelling us towards the platform with a familiar rush of adrenaline.

As the pod descends, a surprising thought crosses my mind. Our mating, a necessity in this twisted game, didn’t feel as daunting as I had anticipated. In fact, it brought us closer in a way I hadn’t expected. This realization brings a lightness to my heart, a flicker of hope in the midst of chaos.

We’ve mated once already — as indicated by these golden lights on each of our pods — and we need only do it two more times to be free from this hellish landscape.

Hurtling through the alien atmosphere, a giggle escapes me, a sound of amusement and release. The absurdity of the situation, the juxtaposition of fear and newfound comfort, strikes me in a way it hadn’t before.

The pyramid zooms into view through the glass floor of my pod, still distant but growing closer. Our designatedSave Point.

I’m filled with a sense of anticipation. As the pod nears its destination, I find myself looking forward to mating once more, knowing that, in this bizarre world, I have someone by my side.

And soon, inside me too.

M’ijel

My pod’s thrustors engage, slowing my pod’s descent, before it thuds into the earth. My heart races as I claw at the pod door, my every thought focused on Zoey.

The need to ensure her safety is a driving force, propelling me with urgency and concern. With a final, forceful tug, the door gives way, and I emerge into the alien landscape, immediately scanning for her.

Relief floods through me as I spot Zoey’s pod nearby. Our pods have crashed into the pyramid’s stone structure with violent force, leaving behind clear imprints of our arrival.

I rush towards her, my steps quick and desperate. As I reach her, I see she’s already pushing herself out of her pod. We waste no time, moving instinctively towards each other, our arms wrapping around in a tight embrace.

The sensation of holding her, feeling her safe in my arms, is a balm to the chaos of our situation.

I lean in to kiss her, the action driven by more than the primal need instigated by the game’s rules. This kiss symbolizessomething far deeper, a connection that has grown and flourished despite the strangeness and dangers surrounding us.

It’s a realization of something profound — abondthat feels destined, a sense of finding a missing piece in each other.

The kiss is a whirlwind of emotions, a rush of feelings that speak of love, longing, and a newfound completeness. It’s nothing like the warrior solitude I once knew, a life now unimaginable without her.

That’s what love is, I realize; where being with that person makes everything else in your life make sense. And everything else is irrelevant.

I cradle her face gently, our lips meeting in a passionate, emotion-laden embrace.

Zoey’s response is fervent, her arms pulling me closer, mirroring the depth of feelings that resonate within me. It’s as if our souls are entwined, affirming the depth and truth of our connection.

Here, amidst the ruins of a civilization long gone, against the backdrop of a game designed for alien entertainment, we have discovered a genuine and pure bond.

I wonder if this too is part of the Malquarans’ evil plan, but I don’t think so.

This is love. Real. Genuine. Not fake like everything else in this world.

As we break from our kiss, our gazes locked, the world beyond fades into insignificance. In that moment, surrounded by uncertainty and danger, we find solace and strength in each other.

Zoey

As M’ijel and I make our way up the steep steps of the ancient pyramid, hand in hand, I can’t help but feel a deep connection to him.
