My eyes follow her through the room as she finally settles by the entrance, exuding an aura of effortless grace and poise. She welcomes the guests with a warm smile as they enter through ornate double doors, their faces greeted by soft ambient lighting that cascades from sophisticated chandeliers suspended from the high ceilings.

Carissa is wearing a tailored black pants suit, the sleek lines accentuating her stature. Her hair, styled in a sophisticated yet modern updo, frames her face elegantly, showcasing a confident demeanor that seamlessly compliments the evening’s ambiance.

Soon after, Lydia joins in by the door in a crisp, white blouse and tailored skirt that sits way above her knees, her ID hanging from the blue holder around her neck.

But I can’t keep my eyes off Carissa. I can’t help but notice the warmth radiating from her smile. It isn't just a mere curve of the lips.

It’s as if the first light of dawn, gentle yet illuminating, spreads across her face. Her eyes sparkle with sincerity, reflecting a deep-rooted dedication to ensuring the guests feel welcomed and appreciated.

I instantly realize how much I miss having that smile directed toward me. I wonder if there is anyone else with such a sincere smile.

I would give anything to see her this happy about being around me again. These days, I can only watch her from a distance because the moment I get close, she becomes so gloomy and shows no reaction to my words.

By the time I turn to look at Carissa again, she’s still standing there all smiles, but this time, she’s shaking a man’s hand, and he seems unwilling to let go as they chat.

James Mcwary.

Executive Director of Fountain Groups.

I try to read his lips as he continues to chat while holding her hand, but I can't make anything of it.

What are you doing, Carissa? Pull away, I almost yell at the top of my voice.

I almost lose my cool the minute Carissa starts with a gentle giggle, which then crescendos into a melodious cascade of laughter.

My brows furrow, betraying a flicker of unease, while my jaw clenches almost imperceptibly. My gaze lingers, scrutinizing the scene as James lifts his free hand to adjust his glasses with finesse.

I attempt to maintain a composed facade, but a subtle restlessness betrays my inner turmoil. Unable to withstand the sight any longer, I take a step heading to the stairs, but I stop in my tracks as he nods and walks away from her and into the ballroom.

Clarissa turns to catch a glimpse of him before she continues on her post. An unsettling feeling rests in the pit of my stomach as my gaze fixates on her, and a frown takes over my expression.

I knew I shouldn't have gone this long without doing something to win her back. What was I thinking?

”Sir, we’re ready,” Jesse’s voice from behind me interrupts my thoughts.

I turn to him and straighten my suit. “Alright.”

After the guests find their seats, most of them with champagne glasses in hand, I make my entrance amidst thunderous applause.

I put on my best smile as I make my way through the tables, which have been meticulously set with crisp white linens and futuristic centerpieces, and to the stage, bathed in soft blue and white lighting.

A backdrop of intertwined circuitry patterns highlights the company’s logo.

The media has taken most of the front row as their camera’s lights flash repeatedly into my eyes.

Standing on the podium, I look around the room of loyal and intending clients and of course, my staff, and when my eyes meet Carissa’s, I look away to keep from getting distracted.

“Ladies and gentlemen, good evening and welcome,” I say into the microphone. A loud round of applause follows my greetings and eventually dies down.

“It is with immense pleasure and gratitude that I stand before you today on this special occasion— a celebration of not only a milestone achieved but a testament to the relationships we cherish.” I smile at the positive response I get from the crowd as some cheer me on while others nod.

It reminds me of the amount of work I have put in and serves as a consolation to know that it’s not in vain. All these people let us handle their work because we are doing something right–because they trust me.

“Accept my heartfelt appreciation to each of you, our esteemed clients, partners, and friends. Your unwavering support and trust have been the cornerstone of our success. This milestone we celebrate today stands as a testament to the collaborative efforts and…”

My speech is interrupted by the sight of James making his way from his seat to Carissa, who is standing at the far end of the hall.

The audience looks to me in anticipation as a little murmuring ensues. I shake my head slightly to stay present and try to look away, but my eyes keep making their way back to the scene.
