Chapter 1

Emma

As I sit in front of Declan, I know what is to come. He is giving me that look—The same that Fabian gave me six months ago.

“Declan, if you have something to say to me…” I trail off. He looks at me. I feel like a mother talking to her petulant five-year-old son begging him to tell me what happened in school.

“I don’t think this is working.” I was expecting it but I still felt a squeeze. After all, Declan had dinner with my brother just last week.

“Oh,” I say.

“Is that all you are going to say?” I frown.

“What do you mean?” I ask.

“This is exactly why I am breaking up with you.”

“You just knew I was going to say oh when you break up with me?”

“No—” He pauses. “It’s like you are absent. Like you don’t like me. Enough.” He adds at the back when he sees me raise a questioning brow.

“Uh-oh.” I don’t know what to say. I like Declan. Or at least, I liked him well enough to say yes to him when he asked me out about four months ago.

“Well..” He is waiting for me to say more.

“Declan, I don’t know what you want me to say.” He shakes his head. “I am sorry that this relationship wasn’t what you wanted,” I say and I genuinely mean it.

I stand up. We have only ordered drinks.

“Would you like me to pay?” He looks at me like I have offended him.

“I will take that as a no. Goodbye, Declan, and good luck.” I went over to the side of his table and kissed him on the cheek.

He stands up and follows me. He drove me here.

“Let me take you home.” He offers.

“I think it’s better if I just get a cab.” He nods and watches as I call for a cab. I gave him one last wave as I entered the cab.

Damn, there another one goes.

As I enter my apartment, I know instantly that there’s someone else there. No. Two people—my brother, Damian, and his friend, Ryan.

“I am starting to think I shouldn’t have given you a key,” I say to my brother as I dump my bag on the couch.

“C’mon, don’t be like that. You know you always want your elder brother around.” I shake my head and give him the most convincing look I can muster.

“No.”

“Ow, you hurt my heart.” My idiot brother then proceeds to hold his chest in exaggeration.

“Emma.” I hear Ryan say from across the room. He is sitting in the dining area munching on my potato chips. He is in his work clothes. His black shirt is rolled up to his forearms exposing his impressive biceps. He is spotting a new hairstyle, instead of his pretty jet-black hair that always had one stray strand framing his face, he’s spotting a much lower one—a buzz cut, showing his impressive facial structure.

He regards me with his dark eyes.

“It’s been so long, Emma.” Oh, God. His voice. Don’t even get me started on his voice.
