I muster every bit of strength I have and mouth the three words I wish I could say aloud. I wish I could have said them over and over again. I wish I’d been able to say them more than just that one time. But at least that moment was perfect.

I love you.

I allow my eyes to drift closed, and a smile tips up the corners of my lips as my entire body crumples. The body holding mine upright falters, his balance thrown off by the dead weight in his arms.

Maybe that will buy my men enough time to end this.

CHAPTERSIXTY-SEVEN

WYATT

There are moments in my life that I had no idea were going to shape me into the man I am today.

When my father beat my mother to death.

When he died a few years later from a drug overdose.

When my unit was attacked when I was in the SEALs, and I was the only survivor.

When my ex-wife left me.

The morning I woke up and went to the club like any other day, just to meet the woman I knew would be the love of my life.

At the time, I had no idea how those moments would change who I was. But this one right here, as I watch the light flicker out of Leighton’s eyes and see the moment she gives up, I know this moment is going to fuck me up for the rest of my life.

I know there will never be a time I can close my eyes and not see this exact moment in time.

I know my heart is never going to recover from losing her.

And I know Elias will never be the same either.

Leighton slumps forward, her weight shifting in the commissioner’s arms, causing him to lose his balance. This is it. This is our chance.

Jason and his father take their eyes off us for long enough to look behind them, but that’s a mistake, because that gives us each a chance to unload a bullet into one of them.

I hit Jason right between the eyes. It’s not nearly as satisfying as I wish it was, but just having the cunt die at my hands is enough.

Elias takes down the commissioner as he fights to get Leighton back in front of him. Too bad for him that Elias is a damn good shot, and so he never gets the chance.

And Kaos takes down the governor with two shots to the chest.

I drop my gun and sprint across the distance. I fall to my knees in front of Leighton and drag her limp body into my lap.

I brush her matted hair from her cheeks. “Angel,” I whisper. “Open those pretty eyes for me, baby.”

“We need to get her out of here.” Elias crouches in front of us, his eyes filled with worry.

Sirens blare in the distance, and I know our time is up. I close my eyes and relish the feel of her body in my arms, allow myself this moment to tell myself she’s finally where she belongs, and then I hand her over to Elias so I can stand.

We jog out of the building as the sirens draw nearer.

Bishop’s BMW idles a few feet away. Kovu slides into the front while Elias and I take the back seat with Leighton. Kaos jogs off in the direction of his bike, and when I open my mouth to question whether that’s safe considering the cops are seconds away, Bishop chuckles. “He loves the chase. He’ll draw them after him, so we can get Leighton to the compound to see the doctor.”

“Should we take her to a hospital?” Elias asks, his eyes glued to our girl’s beautiful face.

“Do you want to explain how the police commissioner’s daughter got beaten black and blue, has a stab wound, and is being brought in by a bunch of known criminals?” He raises a brow in the rearview mirror.

He has a point.
