“Okay, what’s going on?” he asks, leaning his elbow on the bar and turning his body to face me.

I’ve never lied to my best friend before, and I don’t intend to start, but the problem is, I don’t know what’s going on with me, and I don’t know how to tell him it feels like something is missing. We’ve been in the same routine for so many years, it feels monotonous, and the shit with the Legion certainly isn't helping my mood.

“I don’t know.” It’s as honest as I can be without hurting him. Wyatt is the sensitive one. He takes things personally, and if I tell him I’m bored, he’ll think it’s him I’m bored with. His ex-wife, like my own, fucked him up, but he wears his heart on his sleeve, and I have to be conscious of his feelings.

His brows knit together, and his lips tip into a frown. “You’ve never lied to me before, brother.”

I sigh and rub my hand down my face. “Do you ever feel like there’s something missing?”

He watches me closely for a moment, but where I expect to see hurt, I see interest. “Something like what?” he asks carefully.

“That’s what I don’t know,” I tell him, my eyes flicking around the lounge area, as if it may present me with the answers to all my questions, but the black and crimson setting leaves me with nothing.

“Your drinks, Sirs,” Abigail says softly, and a tray appears in front of us.

Wyatt smiles softly at her and reaches into his pocket, drawing out a few bills and placing them on the tray before taking both drinks. “Thank you, Abigail.”

A soft blush appears on her pale cheeks before she disappears across the room to serve the other members, and Wyatt hands me my drink.

“I do,” he says.

“You do what?” I turn my attention back to him, and he gives me a knowing look.

“I know what our lives are missing.”

CHAPTERTWO

WYATT

My best friend stares at me through deep-brown eyes expectantly, as if I hold all the answers. I can’t offer him the answers to all the world’s questions, but I can tell Elias what the gaping hole in our lives is. He’s not going to like what I’m about to say, and there’s every possibility he’s going to deny it, but that’s only because he’s the stubborn one.

I’ve often likened us to yin and yang. He’s hard and stoic, while I prefer to live my life with a smile on my face. Even when we scene, I’m the soft one. I comfort the sub and give aftercare while Elias dishes out the punishments.

“We need a woman,” I tell him.

He sighs and rolls his eyes. “You think we need to scene? That’s your answer?”

“No.” I shake my head. “We need a girlfriend, someone for us to love and nurture and who will complete us.” It’s been weighing on me for the last few months, the need to add the missing piece to our puzzle growing with each day that passes.

Elias and I have lived as bachelors almost the entire time we’ve known one another. It worked for us when we were fresh out of marriages we were miserable in, but we’ve healed. We’re not the same men we were back then. We’ve moved on from the women in our past, and it’s time we stopped letting the sins of two people dictate our futures. Not just to fuck a sub every once in a while, but to fall in love again.

Elias laughs, the sound strong and confident as it erupts from his chest. “You’ve lost your fucking mind.”

“No, I haven’t. You think there’s something missing, and I can tell you exactly what it is. Whether you want to believe me now, or you want to figure it out on your own, I can guarantee you that you will come to the same conclusion.” I’ve found that sometimes it’s better to allow my stubborn best friend to realize things himself, but I’m not patient enough for that right now. Not when I realized what our missing piece was months ago, and each day we don’t find them is a day too long. He may not have realized it, but we’ve both been getting progressively more miserable, and I don’t know how much more of it I can handle.

“We agreed a long time ago that we didn’t want a permanent woman in our lives, that they cause more trouble than they’re worth. And even if I was willing to entertain your absurd idea, it's not safe while we're working with the Legion.”

I nod. “I did say that, you’re right. But it’s been ten years, Elias. We can’t allow Beck and Casey to ruin our lives anymore. We need to move on with our lives, and it’s time we consider what our futures are going to look like. Do you want to get old and gray with only me?” I scoff. “Wouldn’t you rather have a woman in our lives? One who we can take care of? Maybe even have a kid or two? Doesn’t that sound better than a lonely eternity?” I know which life I prefer the sound of. But the reality is, I won’t abandon my best friend. If he decides this isn’t something he wants, if he decides he wants to remain an eligible bachelor for the rest of his life, then I’ll be right there beside him.

Elias opens his mouth to respond when Alexander, one of our dungeon supervisors, approaches us with worry etched into his brow. “I think we may have a problem,” he says.

“What is it?” I ask, placing my drink down on the counter so I’m ready to jump into whatever situation requires my attention. As I’m sure you can imagine, owning a sex club can be a lot of fun, but despite all the safeguards we put into place, there are always issues. Doms who don’t listen to the rules, subs who get too deep into sub space and can’t be pulled back out by whoever they’ve scened with. If I’m honest, it’s the issues that brighten my day. They give me purpose in a life that has become mundane.

“There’s a bit of an issue in the front bar.” His eyes flick over his shoulder, and I’m jumping into action before I’m conscious of it.

I give a few polite smiles and hellos on my way past, but don’t slow down enough to hear anyone’s response. Elias is on my heels, his need to protect kicking in. It’s an old habit from when we were SEALs. He feels the need to protect and serve despite having been out of the service for such a long time.

Raised voices catch my attention as we step foot into the front bar. If I had to hazard a guess, this is where a lot of the guests will stay tonight. Most people don’t like to venture into the club on their first time here because it’s overwhelming. There are subs tied to the Saint Andrews Cross being whipped, and women on their knees for their Doms. It’s a lot to take in if you’re not familiar with the lifestyle or if you’re just looking to dip your toes in.
