“I could never hate you, Lilly. And if we're being honest, as amazing as you are—and trust me, you are—I feel like we make better friends.”

Relief fills me. “You promise you don’t hate me?” I look up at him and wipe the tears from my eyes.

“Never. And we’re still best friends.” He kisses my forehead.

“You're the best.”

“I know,” he chuckles, shooting me a wink. “You okay?”

“Only if you are.”

“I’m fine.” He gives me a soft smile.

“Hey, Lilly!” Milly’s voice has me looking over to see her standing by the back door. “Bee is looking for you. She’s not feeling very well.”

“Is she okay?” The rush of concern in Jonas’ voice has me fighting back a smile.

So, there may have been another reason I wanted to end things with Jonas. I don’t think the two of them realize it yet, but Bianca and Jonas are totally in love with each other. Honestly, I don’t know why he asked me out and not Bee.

And Bee, being the best friend a girl could ask for, supported our relationship. It was only the past few months I’ve allowed myself to see their connection.

“I think so. She’s out front getting air and waiting to get a ride home.”

“Thanks, Milly,” Jonas says before turning to me. “Come on, hot stuff, party is over. And we have a bestie to get home.”

I giggle and follow him through the side gate, grateful that it went so well when I was preparing for the worst.

When Bianca comes into view, Jonas picks up his pace, wanting to get to her faster. He kneels down and puts his hand on her knee. “Hey, Bumblebee, you good?”

Bianca groans, “Too much beer. Why do I drink it? It’s so nasty.”

We both chuckle and Jonas gives her knee a squeeze but pauses, looking up at me like I might be upset about it. I just smile and shoot him a wink. He stares at me for a beat before scooping up our best friend.

“What are you doing?” Bianca asks as we start toward Jonas’ truck.

“I’m taking you two home. I think you’ve had enough to drink.”

“Put me down, you can’t carry me like this,” she protests, trying to get out of his arms.

“Why not?” he asks as we reach his truck. I rush ahead and open the passenger door.

“Because you have a girlfriend, right there.” Jonas places her down on the seat and walks around the truck to his side.

“No he doesn’t,” I tell her as I slide in next to her, closing the door behind me.

“What?” she blinks over at me.

“That’s where I went, to break up with Jonas.” I grimace.

Her eyes widen, looking from me to Jonas, who gets in and starts up the truck. “But why?”

He shrugs. “We realized we’re better off as friends.” He looks over at us and smiles.

“Oh...I’m sorry?”

“Don’t be.” I put my head on her shoulder as we start down the road. “Everyone should have the chance to be with someone who makes them their whole world. And that wasn’t us.”

“I wasn’t going to say anything but, come on, you two hardly ever kissed,” Bee slurs. “Did you ever fuck?”
