“Man, get out of my room. Knock first,” I snap.

“Oh, man, you gotta put a sock on the door or something next time,” Ryan says, a grin spreading across his face, a knowing look in his eyes as he backs out of the room. “And hell, put that thing away!” He scrunches up his face at my full frontal.

Once Ryan leaves, I turn to Emily, who’s hurriedly putting her dress back on.

“Sorry about that,” I apologize.

“Doubt he saw anything, but I gotta go,” she says, quickly grabbing her shoes. I grab my sweatpants and tee, pulling them on hastily.

“I’ll give you a lift. Let’s go,” I offer, wanting to make sure she gets home fast.

As we head out of the room, Emily glances over at me with a softness in her eyes that makes my heart skip a beat.

“I’m not sure when things changed between us, but I like it…” she says, her voice trailing off.

I smile at her, feeling a warmth spread through me.

“I’ve always cared about you, Emily. It just took some time for me to realize how much.”

As we walk, she continues, “This Friday night, I have the band’s big audition across the city. Any chance you could drive me? It’s a huge gig to be an opening act for The Midnight Echoes.”

“Are you fucking with me? I love them!” I’m genuinely impressed. “That’s sick. For sure, I can take you. I have our final match during the day, but I’ll be free after that. But only on one condition?”

“And what’s that?” She grins.

“That you’ll watch my game that day and cheer for me?”

She nods, her face lighting up with a smile. “Well, I already have it on my calendar to attend.”

Chuckling, I take her hand in mine and walk her outside toward my car. Her place is all the way on the other side of campus.

Emily turns to me as we jump into the car. “Dad wants to have a family dinner this weekend... with you there.” Her eyes search mine for a reaction.

“He does? I’d fucking love that!” I grin, loving that her dad has embraced me to the point that he wants me to be more involved in their family.

“You’re not freaking out?” she asks, studying my face.

“Should I be? This is what I want. Maybe you’re freaking out?”

“I am slightly.” She drags her seatbelt across her. “This is moving super-fast.”

I place a hand on her knee. “I’m here for you, pretty girl.”

CHAPTER TWELVE

EMILY

The atmosphere in the stadium is electric as our team, the Central State Eagles, are facing off against the Central State Phoenix in the college finals. I’m seated in the stands, close to the field, surrounded by so many people… the place is packed. Sarah’s right by my side, her gaze fixed on the field, gawking at the players, while I can’t help but feel a sense of pride and excitement to watch Jake playing.

Each roar of the crowd, every cheer and shout, brings a new wave of adrenaline. I’ve never been much of a sports fan, usually avoiding college games, but being here now, supporting Jake, it’s an entirely different experience. The passion of the fans is contagious, their energy infectious.

Suddenly, Tyler scores, and Sarah and I are on our feet, caught up in the frenzy of celebration. Sure, the guy is a jerk, but he’s helping our team win.

The crowd erupts around us, a sea of cheers and applause. My gaze finds Jake on the field. Our eyes lock, and he blows me a kiss, complete with his hand to his mouth and sending it my way. I feel a dozen eyes turn in my direction, but for once, I don’t care. Yes, I’m dating Jake, the hottest guy at college, and I love every bit of it.

The game continues with intensity. The crowd’s roars rise and fall with each play. The energy in the stadium pulses through my veins with every heartbeat of the game. Sarah grips my hand tightly, her excitement palpable.

“Come on, you’ve got this, Eagles!” she shouts, her voice blending with the chorus of cheers around us. The score is tied, and time’s running out.
